I just installed Clamwin. I'm running Windows XP SP3, 32bit.
When I tried to download Virus Database Update manually I got a series of warnings.
See below just a part of the unfinished Report:

Please tell me what I'm doing wrong.

There a some problems with ClamWin. ClamWin uses the scanning engine and virus database provided by the Clam Av project, which is a free, open source antivirus for Linux email scanners. The Clam Av developers just prepare a Windows port from the Clam AV Linux source code and slap a GUI (graphical user interface) on it. The message you saw is really for Clam Av users--not ClamWin users. The ClamWin users have forgotten to suppress this message in their Windows port.

Also...ClamWin is not a real-time scanner, and it has not been updated/improved for well over a year now It also scans very slow, and the ClamWin developers do not seem interested in fixing this. For best protection, I suggest that you do not use ClamWin and instead use a real-time antivirus like Microsoft's free and simple Windows Defender. There are lots of other free antivirus programs for Windows users. Most of them are good, free versions of commercial AV software, but some of them can track you and sell information about you to make money. That is why I recommend Microsoft Windows Defender--it's free (already installed on newer Windows computers) and simple to use. Windows Defender and OS Armor (free from the people are No Virus Thanks) will provide you with very good protection. OS Armor does not track you, is simple to use, and configures your computer for security rather than being an antivirus).

winxp: I was getting that same error message for awhile an then it stopped but the definitions were loaded correctly.

HELP PLEASE clamWIN on Windows 98
I am now having a problem on windows 98 (one hard drive) but not on on the windows 2000 (second hard drive)--dual boot computer
I had gotten t a point on 98 where the a machine was flickering away the whole day.
Last year I uninstalled and re-installed it including deleting all mentions of it in the registry.
That worked but this year the problem occurred again and I repeated the steps and now the machine does flicker showing the download, creates the temp folder in c:/windows/alluser/.claimwin/db but they are blank and the definitions are not being updated.
I even tried to copy them in from another computer and that did not help.
When I try to go into clam and update the process starts but nothing happens.
On windows 2000 it is running okay (but yells about my virtual memory) which it does not on windows 98
Computer is Dell Dimension XPS T450 with 768 meg of ram.
Running latest clam exe and clam sentinel 1.22
I see from some posts there are not many windows 98 users so I would be happy to be a beta tester

As a ClamWin moderator, I must tell you that, in my opinion, ClamWin development has ceased. There have been no new ClamWin versions for over 2 years, while Clam AV for Linux is constantly being improved and has had several new versions developed during that time. I have been unable to contact Alch, the main ClamWin developer.

Clam Sentinel development ceased in 2014. It is now unable to provide any good protection for today's new, high-tec, fileless malware that is constantly being improved.

If you still want to use ClamWin/Clam Sentinel, try uninstalling/reinstalling one or both. My advice to you, however, is to look into some of the software programs from No Virus Thanks--the little OS Armor program in particular. They can provide some minimal protection to Win XP and maybe to Win 98.

I had tried to uninstall from windows 98 the sentinel and the clam and even try putting back an older version of clamwin and then the latest to no avail--even stripped put all mention of clam in the registry but you never get everything.
Since it was working okay on windows 2000 I tried to copy the main and daily and all that over from D; drive to C: drive but when trying to run clam from c: it really did not pick it up to create any action when I try to hit update or ran scan from either clam or sentinel after doing that. I do get blank temp folders as if it is trying to download during the scheduled time and you hear the machine chatter for an hour but that is all Clam still acknowledges when I put a usb key in at least. Hopefully it is still protecting me from inbound email through Thunderbird 2.0. You can't surf anything with any browser on window 98 and 2000.
Drat the os Armour os for xp or greater. Wonder if I can run regular clamAV on win 98 . For years Clam was the only one kind enough to think of the older equipment

You will probably be unable to run Clam AV for Windows on an older Windows machine. Clam AV is for Linux machines, and they made/still make a command line version for Windows, but I don't think they would go to the trouble of making the changes needed to accommodate an older version of Windows like Win 98. As I mentioned, in my opinion ClamWin is on its last legs and today's malware is just too smart for it anyway. Please keep this in mind.

One last hope. Avast was one of the last AVs to drop Win 98. Try this old site for info https://www.oldapps.com/avast_antivirus.php?system=Windows_98 on the web. Virus Total says the site is clean.

Yep, I have been using that for years but it no longer will work on win 98 even using the old setup file.
I forgot what they called it that changed making it incompatible. I eventually experienced an inability to boot the computer and mimicked hard drive failure. Avast was still to work on XP, but on two different computers, it made one use full CPU usage to the point of moving he mouse just an inch took over 10 minutes, and on another XP machine of a different brand computer almost as bad a thing. That is when I found Clam

Well, that's about all the help I am able to provide you. As I mentioned, I don't think you can hang your hat on ClamWin, and I don't know if the Clam AV version for Windows provides support for older computers (probably not--it is also command line, I believe). I think that the malware writers are not doing very much work toward infecting Win 98 machines now, so you might be safer than you think..

LOLOL very true especially since NTFS and FAT are not compatible in some respects.
I recall once at work when we had XP machines, everyone got infected but my 98 held true--think at most my screen flickered but noting else happened.

Win 98 was the first real good version of Windows. I used it from about 1999-2006 when I found ClamWin. My favorite Win OS, however was/is Win XP. I don't see why MS doesn't stick with a good OS and just make small, incremental, necessary changes to it instead of periodically coming up with an entirely new OS version. They are more of a marketing company than an IT company.

I hear you GuitarBob--tis all about money and the need to replace what was with something else.
I still use my DOS/win 98 machine and still use the small floppies--save files to large area as a second backup and floppies for the day to day work. I found 98 most stable--xp was terrible for me at work, 7 is a little better.
Toyed around with puppy linux and that was not too bad but just like looking at a mac the file structure of course takes getting used to. AS with all the upgrades n matter what some things get improved while other good things fall by the waist side.
I had always been able to open all word/excel documents simultaneously from windows explorer, now with the office 365 or maybe windows 7 I have to open up one file type at a time.--sigh
