I've got hi speed internet and downloaded this program but it wants to download the Virus Defnitions Database and it seems to take FOREVER. Doesn't seem to do anything and I've left it trying to run for a couple hours now. How long should it take? If I can't download it directly, where else can I get it? HELP!!!!

what operating system?

if you have a personal firewall you might need to allow freshclam.exe rights to connect to the internet.

Windows 98 SE, unfortunately. I really want this done quick so any tips you can offer, please let me know. E-mail me directly if you have to at jdbaker4164@yahoo.com. No personal firewall. At the moment, I've got nothing which is why I was trying to download this. I'd purchase Norton Antivirus but just can't right now

Windows 98 is slowly losing support for most software. I believe that some of the later versions of ClamWin don't support it as well as earlier versions did. That's not due to the ClamWin team--new capabilities are being added to software, and Windows 98 is no longer kept up by Microsoft.

You can occasionally have trouble updating ClamWin--try again in a half hour or so. It usually works for me after a couple of tries. Sometimes they have problem with their mirror download sites.

You should use ClamWin as a backup scanner only., since it is not a resident scanner--it only scans when you request it (on demand scanning). There are a couple of good free, full-time resident scanners. I know that AVG from Grisoft works on Win 98 machines. For download, go to: https://www.grisoft.com/doc/special-stay-protected-isw-free75cnv/us/crp/0#free. Use the Download for Free Link. Keep it updated, and it should work okay. AntiVir from Avira will probably work on a Win 98 machine, but I'm not sure--it's at: https://www.free-av.com/.

some users reported problems with Win98. You may try to put db.us.clamav.net.
If that fails try the manual method described here:

I am using XP and both methods - via:
https://database.clamav.net/main.cvd
and
https://db.local.clamav.net/main.cvd
and neither works!

Never mind. The site:
https://www.clamav.net/download/cvd
states https://db.local.clamav.net/main.cvd
but they really mean to replace "local" with "us" or "uk" etc.
