I've just tested 0.94.1 on a windows 98 se italian, and freshclam works without problems.
Unfortunately I've noticed that freshclam often has a lot of problems on win32

"I've just tested 0.94.1 on a windows 98 se italian, and freshclam works without problems." WHY?
"Unfortunately, I've noticed that freshclam often has a lot of problems on win32" WHY?
Under the assumption that you are working for "free", the following activity might be too time intensive, but give it a try if and when time permits. Using your, 'windows 98 se italian" CD load the Windows 98 Resource Kit Tools Sampler > Open the Win98TMC > Tool Categories > File Tools > WinDiff and compare the two files. I would, but, I am not a programmer and hence, can't read code. You, however, can, and WinDiff will highlight the difference between .94.0 & 94.1 which might be enlightening and resolve the WHY! No guarantees!
Why do I know there are differences? When you load the .94.1 upgrade, it tells you that FreshClam has been patched.

iirc there are no differences between freshclam 0.94 and 0.94.1, this problem on win98 was reported by some users but I'm unable to reproduce it

I see "someone" patched FreshClam... Last night?
Both .94.0 FreshClam and .94.1 FreshClam download now... Well almost! - See below.
Previously, .94.0 would download, but the following "warning" was included in the download:
LibClamAV Error: DNS Resolver: sendto() failed, No Error - AND - .94.1 didn't download at all.
Today, Both the 94.0 and .94.1 versions of FreshClam downloaded DB updates and to the previous warning:
LibClamAV Error: DNS Resolver: sendto() failed, No Error
the following warning was added:
LibClamAV Warning: Winsocket Error #0 not mapped, please report
But, I didn't leave well enough alone!
I uninstalled ClamWin and re-downloaded .94.1 and reinstalled it - FreshClam didn't work! But, I now have images of everything that took place. When I replaced FreshClam .94.1 with .94.0 and downloaded the DB update, I got an additional the warning:
WARNING: getfile: daily-8594.cdfiff not found on remote server (IP: 168.143.19.95)
WARNING: getpatch: Can't download daily-8594.cdiff from database.clamav.net
BUT --The "LibClamAV Error: DNS Resolver: sendto() failed, No Error" also appeared without
the "LibClamAV Warning: Winsocket Error #0 not mapped, please report"
See if this helps...!

Hello rr1165,
New Clamwin release (0.95) is under test right now. It could be good if you could apply for beta testing under win98. Have a think about it; Clamwin needs supports from users.

Let me be blunt - I am not smart enough, nor do I have the skill or personality to be a beta tester! Thanks for asking...
Now, what I do have is basic common sense, and if someone will take the time to analyze the information I have provided, I firmly believe the " DB download" issue will go away as regards Win98SE and possibly for other OS' as well.

GREAT! 95.1 is here! It doesn't download the DB (OS Win98SE) and now you can't replace FreshClam 95.1 with 94.0 because it can't link to the lib...
Who writes FreshClam, someone who doesn't get to see the light of day and is fed "Twinkies" to keep them energized? Or, is it a committee made up of Larry, Curly and Moe?

The open source Clam scanning engine used by ClamWin is written for the Linux operating system, and it was originally designed for email servers. ClamWin developed a graphical interface for it with a Windows port. Linux Email servers are still the primary users of Clam, which is now owned by Sourcefire, creators of the Snort intrusion detection software. It is my understanding that they are not considering any concessions to direct Windows use in their present/future plans. This makes it especially hard on Legacy Windows systems, as the ClamWin project has to devote its primary effort to porting each new version over to current Windows users.

Semantic differential appears to have crept into our exchange!
I am not talking about ClamWin, I am talking about FreshClam - the apparent communications component. It is not the large a program - it was patched between 94.0 and 94.1 which was the last time that FreshClam worked...at least for me on a Win98SE machine. Within the next week or so, I will provide the path of these changes and what worked and what didn't. Earlier in this post I used words...this time I will use words and pictures! Maybe you can find someone to run WinDiff or another comparison program to determine what changed and reverse or adjust it!
This can't be that difficult for an accomplished communications programmer.

Dear rr1165,
first excuse for my bad english, I'm from Italy.
I have the same problem with some old Windows 98 client(s) in my company.
With 0.94 updates are OK and not with 0.94.1.
Today I try to uninstall 0.94.1, reboot, install 0.95.1...but still have the same problem with update.
I tro to copy, how you have suggested, FreshClam.exe and rename the original, but receive an error on missing link to LIBCLAMAV.DLL.
I try to copy old LIBCLAMAV.DLL (of 0.94) in 0.95.1 but nothing...the icon of ClamWin is still present in status bar, but "Open ClamWin" don't work.
I wait for any reply.
Rick

Hello All,
Know this is not a 'solution' but until the issue is solved by developers (remember that Clamwin from the technical point of view is maintained by two people only who can devote their time to the project after their everyday paid jobs) my suggestion is to roll back temporarily to 0.94 version (it's still available on Sourceforge page ). Thus you should benefit at least of the virus DB update feature and scans can be carried out as usual. Another option is to download daily.cvd file from www.clamav.net manually and repace it on yr. local Clamwin installation.
Regards,
Antonio

Thanks Antonio, I solved it in this way for now.
Thanks for all that you do and good job.
Grazie mille Antonio, infatti al momento ho risolto proprio in questo modo.
Grazie per tutto quello che fate e buon lavoro!
