Running Clamwin 0.97.7 on Windows Server 2008.
Udated to 0.97.7 few days ago. Since then getting:
"Can't get information about database.clamav.net. Non-recoverable failure in name resolution.
getpatch: Can't download daily-16983.cdiff from database.clamav.net."
I can 'ping' database.clamav.net. It returns IP for db.ca.clamav.net (as I'm in Canada, eh)
Tried that and the 2 mirrors listed for Canada in place of database.clamav.net in the Settings for "Internet Updates". Same error.
Put 'freshclam.exe' and port 53/tcp in Windows Firewall exceptions. Same thing.
Have a Linksys router...hasnt been a problem in 2 years Ive been using Clamwin here.
Only relevant change I can think of other than Windows updates is that Google Chrome & Toolbar
snuck on in February.
Much appeciate any suggestions.

There have been some problems since the Microsoft patch for KB 2823324. I understand Kaspersky has a problem because of it. You are running Windows server 2008, I see. See this article about it at https://www.h-online.com/security/news/item/Microsoft-pulls-security-update-for-Windows-and-Windows-Server-1840815.html on the web.
Regards,
Update: Read Krebs on Security's article about this at https://krebsonsecurity.com/2013/04/microsoft-hold-off-installing-ms13-036/ on the web. I don't know if this is your problem.

Mine is a brand spanking new machine, not on for 7 hours yet. Fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, freshly downloaded install of ClamWin and I have not yet downloaded a single update from Windows Update. It's still turned off.
I have the exact same problem:
ClamAV update process started at Sat Apr 13 15:05:22 2013
main.cvd is up to date (version: 54, sigs: 1044387, f-level: 60, builder: sven)

I suggest you uninstall the current version of ClamWin (.97.7) and revert back to version .97.6. It should be available at https://sourceforge.net/projects/clamwin/files/clamwin/ on the web. If that updates okay for you, get back and let us know there is something wrong with the current version.

Thanks for the info. We will let the ClamWin developers know about this.
Keep in mind that there may not be any signatures to update, but you should still get an update reportfrom ClamWin showing you are up-to-date. The backlog of Clam AV samples for which signatures can be automated has been eliminated. Signatures are now current at 2 million plus signatures! The remaining malware samples will need manual signatures, and no one is preparing them on a regular, consistent basis.

is it possible that your firewall blocks 0.97.7 freshclam.exe from accessing the internet?

Did you do an uninstall of the old ClamWin and then a fresh install of version .97.7 or did you install version .97.7 over the old version?
Does the version number matter to your firewall?

GB, Uninstalled that Windows update. Didnt fix Clamwin but probably good thing anyway. I'll wait a few days to see if this goes away & then revert version as you suggest. Thanks for your help.

I installed version .97.7 over the old version. Or, more precisely, installed clamwin-update-0.97.6-0.97.7.
Should I try uninstall .97.6 and then a do fresh reinstall?
I have never made any customization for Clamwin in my router/firewall so the version number hardly matters.
Bye

A fresh install can't hurt, so it's worth a try.

Same issue, uninstalled version 97.7 as suggested, visited supplied url in this thread and downloaded the full install (not update) of version 97.6. Running fine and communicated with the virus update server. I am not going to try upgrading until further notices on this issue rectify the virus database not communicating in 97.7
I am running Windows Vista Pro on laptop.
I have Windows 7 at office, see if that ClamWin update to 97.7 works okay.
