If you get a detection shortly after you update an AV, and the file was okay before the update, I suspect a false positive, but to be sure, you would have to upload the detected file to Jotti or Virus Total and see what multiple AVs say about it. I like to see at least 2 of these AVs detect something before I believe it: Avira Antivir, Bitdefender, NOD32, Kaspersky, and Sophos. If the file is not a Windows PE file (not .exe, .dll), I would go with only 1 of these AVs because many AVs do not do as well at detecting malware in non-PE file until the malware has been around for a while.

Hi Pulteny,

I have used the ClamWin/Spybot combination on Win98 without issue, but I did not have Spybot's real time protection enabled. I would disable SD Helper and TeaTimer, then try upgrading ClamWin again. To do so:

In Spybot, select Advanced mode from the Mode menu at the top left, click Yes at the warning. On the left, select Tools > Resident. Remove the check marks from SD Helper and TeaTimer. Exit Spybot.

Let us know how you proceed.

Hi Lipper.

Followed your advice on mods to spybot set up,but when I clicked on "resident" an error message tex exceeds memo capacity comes up.

However if I right click on the tea timer icon in task tray there is an option to 'exit spybot-S&D Resident'. Is this the same operation?

I have joined the msfn forum it has a section for Win/95/98/2000.There I have been advised to send file to vitustotal and jotti, this is a new path for me.

Have used go-back to see file "w9xpopen.exe".I have five versions of it two on the date this problem occurred. A properties check tells me that it is used by python's OS to work around a limitation in Win/95/98.

If I have any success at the virus check sites things might move on,I suspect this is a genuine file and will have to set up spybot to ignore it some how!

Regards pulteny.

Sort of, but only temporarily until the next system boot. You have Ccleaner and can use it to disable TeaTimer permanently. Ccleaner > Tools > Startup. Locate and highlight the TeaTimer entry, click Disable, reboot.

Hi lipper you get around.

As advised went to virustotal and jotti no problems found, so file is genuine clamwin one. I have joined the spybot forum and will peruse the problem there.
Than you all who showed an interest in my hour of need.

Regards pulteny.

I have my doubts about Spybot S&D. You might look into Spyware Blaster. It doesn't do any scanning (real-time or otherwise), so it can be used on any Windows computer without interfering. It blocks some "bad" web sites, sets the kill bit for exploits, does a system snapshot, backs up the hosts file, and lets you block Flash. Updates are about twice a month, and you can do them manually.

Hi all,
Sorry for delay in answering but needed to gird my loins for clamwin update.
Today I removed V 0.97.4 and installed V 0.97.6. This went well and no conflict with Spybot Search & Destroy!!!.

Thank you all who replied to my post.
