Does ClamWin Tray need to run at startup on .97? I'm on a limited resource system with Win 98.

Thanks...

I do not believe you need the ClamWin system tray to run. I disabled mine as a test, and was able to do manual scans, but I'm not sure about scheduled scans.

Are you using the Clam Sentinel real-time front-end with ClamWin? It was originally designed for Windows 98 machines to help use ClamWin as a real-time scanner. You can run both ClamWin and Clam Sentinel from a USB, if that will be better on resurces. Or run one from USB and the other from hard drive. Actually ClamWin does not even have to be operating--just located somewhere that is noted in the Sentinel .ini file; however, you would need to activate ClamWin manually to update the signatures periodically. Sentinel comes with System Monitor, its own heuristic scanner to compliment ClamWin's signatures, and it will identify/quarantine a significant portion of brand new malware. Try it--might help.

you can disable but you'll loose:
1) Scheduled scans
2) Scheduled virus database updates
3) notifications

If you update your db manually and scan manually then it's ok to disable the tray startup

Thank you both for replying.

Yes, I am running Clam Sentinel also, but have to disable real time scanning to open a browser as it takes too much life out of this old box (96 MB, 400 MGHZ).

I have no objections to manual updates or scans, so I'm good to go. I just wanted to be sure there were no adverse system or program issues.

Thanks again, you've been very helpful.

PS Sorry I missed out on the .97 beta testing. Since my XP box died (CPU) a few weeks ago, I've been very busy trying to get this old 98 system running again.

Not to worry. I'm sure there will be another ClamWin beta! Clam AV version .97 surprised me.
