The team is working on performance improvements (at the moment by excluding files that cannot be scanned anyhow).
The only thing you could do yourself is add some smarted filters to exclude some file types for which the risk of infection is low, like .avi, .wav, ...

Some antivirus programs have the option to scan only infectable files. Perhaps this option could be added to ClamWin at some point. I guess there would need to be a list/database of infectable file types which could be maintained periodically by the developers as additional file type infections are found.
