not sure what is wrong here... Clamwin uses DNS queries to determine if there is an updated virus database. But it's just a client query and should never break a DNS server. I have it running on Win 2000 Server with DNS with no problems.
Is there a software application firewall installed, it may be blocking the DNS connections. |

No software firewall on the server. There have been no complaints as of late either. The only thing that I did was to exit the ClamWin System Tray in the taskbar. Does that run a process in the background that might be causing tension???

it runs scheduled virus databse updates that is the only thing which may have a relation to dns. Try starting clamtray.exe again (just run it for c:\program files\clamwin\bin\) and disabling virus database updates.
