Wouldn't it be good to have a developer mailing list, like most OSS projects do ?

It would be a great way to discuss how certain features could/should be implemented (i'm thinking about the new installer and TB plugin that i've been working on recently). Discussing this on the IRC channel is difficult because of the different time zones, and because the discussion is always limited to the number of people that are logged in (and watching) at that time. Also, i believe a developer mailing list would help new developers that would like to join the project but don't know where to start.

I think even a commits-mailing list would be very usefull, just so everyone can see what's being changed. It can also be seen as a quality-improvement, because other developers can easily review the changes and give their comments if they want to.

Recently i've read Karl Fogel's book "Producing open source software" (Karl Fogel was active on OSS projects as Subversion), which made me believe the corner-stones of successfull OSS projects are openness and communication. I believe clamwin could work on this, and i would be happy to help where i can, for example by moderating these lists.

Just wanted to share these thoughts, because i think we are missing out of good developers who would like to help but could use a bit more guidance and motivation to start writing patches.

Speaking from a non-developer/management consultant perspective, this sounds like a good idea. Anything that helps maintain/increase focus will help the ClamWin project. The true test, however, will be whether or not it gets support/good comments. Good luck.

You've got a private forum for testing on here, why not a private forum for development? Forums are easier to follow than mailing lists, a cleaner interface too.
