I'm not sure: can ClamWin remove viruses or send files to quarantine without my knowledge?

Yes! ClamWin comes with a default Infected Files option to Notify the user when a virus is found in a file. It can also be set to Remove or Quarantine. You can change the Infected File Option by opening ClamWin, then select default Tools, Preferences, General. Look under the Infected File Options to change the default to Quarantine.

You should never use the Remove option in case there is a false positive detection, which you can restore using the QRecover.exe file in the main C:\Program Files (x86)\ClamWin\bin of your computer.

ClamWin has some protection against False Positive detections of important Microsoft/Windows files. When this happens, you will get a message that there has been a false detection that was not quarantined. If such files were to be quarantined, you might not be able to use your computer.
