Hello friends,

I am a new user here. I have been using Free Avast antivirus software for long time. Recently few days ago, my AV started saying my router is infected. I am not sure what that meant and thought may be the AV is doing something wrong. To be double sure, I just changed my AV and tried CalmWin Free. It does not show the same issue or error anymore. Have anyone faced this similar issue before? Kindly help!

ClamWin does not provide adequate protection. It is an on-demand scanner that only scans when you tell it to--either with a manual scan or scheduled scan. The Clam AV scan engine used by ClamWin was actually designed for Linux email servers--not Windows personal computers. So ClamWin should be used as a backup to a real-time AV scanner--like Avast. I suggest you reinstall Avast if you have uninstalled it. Update it and do another scan.

You should do a scan with Avast in Windows Safe Mode, if possible, but an AV can not help much with an infected router. Try unplugging the router for a few minutes--cut off the electricity to it. Then see what Avast tells you. If you still have a problem, I suggest that you contact the Avast people for help.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was trying to find out if someone had a similar issue like me and found this post https://silicophilic.com/avast-says-my-router-is-infected/, sounds logical to me, what would be your thoughts on it. Also if this is true would it be possible to prevent another infection?

Changing your admin password to the router is always a good idea. You might also change the name from the default to something else--like Bob's Router, so no one can tell what kind of router it is. I don't know about the other suggestions--they sound okay.

If you get the router warning again, try turning your router off by disconnecting it from the power for about 10 seconds or so. Then turn it back on/plug it in. After it comes online, run an Avast scan again and see what happens. If there are still problems, I suggest that you contact Avast for further help.
