Good day! I like ClamAV, I have not been using it before, but I cant update the database with following error:

Code:

ClamAV update process started at Sat Feb 25 15:32:50 2017
main.cvd is up to date (version: 57, sigs: 4218790, f-level: 60, builder: amishhammer)

WARNING: getpatch: Can't download daily-21468.cdiff from database.clamav.net
.............................................................

1. I tried searching the forum and google, but I did not resolve the problem.
-this is the tutorial that I used : https://cng.ateneo.net/content_clamwin.html
2. I tried reinstalling but it did not work as well.

ClamWin version: 0.99.1

3. I tried installing the 0.99.2 version, 64-bit, but it shows nothing as an icon, in the taskbar or anywhere else.

4. I am new to Linux, but I think ClamWin is good and worth a try.

These forums are devoted to the ClamWin open source antivirus for Windows. The only affiliation we have with Clam AV is that the ClamWin developers prepare a Windows port of the Clam AV for Linux source code.

We can not provide any help for users of Clam AV for Linux. I suggest you visit the Clam AV website and look at the resources there for Clam AV.

@Arakel:

I suspect you're running ClamWin in Wine?

Don't worry about the update 21468 warning. It was deleted and probably added to a subsequent update, or aborted.

0.99.1 is the latest version of ClamWin for Windows. What you installed (0.99.2) is the latest version of ClamAV for Linux, which as you found out has no user interface. It runs solely through daemons and the terminal.

I am running ClamWin on Windows 8.1 Pro. Not on Wine, a Virtual machine or Linux.

The 64-bit version got installed on Windows 8.1 Pro and is visible in the add-remove programs feature, from Control Panel. I do believe though, that its still run through the command-prompt, but I dont know the commands. Therefore if someone can give me a Windows command to test. I will be able to confirm it. "clamav" and "clam" do not work from the command-prompt.

This is the link for download:
https://www.clamav.net/downloads/production/clamav-0.99.2-x64.msi

If you have other ideas, I am willing to try.

OK, that clears some mud out of the water. My suggestion is to uninstall ClamAV. ClamWin (different program!) offers a user interface and the same level of virus detection. If you have already uninstalled ClamWin, download here ( https://www.clamwin.com/content/view/18/46/ ) and re-install. Don't worry about warnings like your software is outdated. 0.99.1 is currently the latest version of ClamWin. You can also ignore warnings like update 21468 not found on server. These updates have either been replaced or deleted, and shouldn't appear the next time you update. Finally, be sure Windows Defender is enabled and active as your real-time anti-virus.

A few questions:

1. What is the difference between ClamAV and ClamWin? The ClamAV seems very ligh, while the ClamWin is 110MBs.
2. I get an error my old clamAV 99.1 version from the site I gave before, which says the database is more than 5 days old, but it can not get updated. I will try again and post the full error.

This is the full error is it ok, when viruses are concerned I prefer to be certain?

3. Why should Windows Defender be on?

ClamWin is a separate, open sourced project than ClamAV, though it uses ClamAV's scan engine and database.

1) ClamWin has a user interface; ClamAV does not. ClamWin has added some features like Quarantine Browser, and a safety net to avoid certain false positive detections.

2) All ClamWin and ClamAV users will get update errors from time to time. These errors normally correct themselves in a day or two.

3) Neither ClamWin nor ClamAV has real-time scanning capability at this time. They are on demand scanners only and can be used for a second opinion. Windows Defender monitors your system continuously without any interaction from you.

There is a great deal of information on the homepage: https://www.clamwin.com/

Thank you for the reply! Great deals of information are sometime s difficult to go through. I read 100s of pages of information. I saw that clamav 32-bit had the same user interface. I will wait for the error to go away.

Is Windows.Defender enough to protect from viruses?

Windows Defender is enough. In fact, after Win7 goes EOL, I suspect a lot of AVs will be shutting down due to Windows Defender being a AV in win8, win10, and beyond.

With ClamWin version .95, we lost some use of the command line, and the issue has not been addressed by the ClamWin developers.

Along with ClamWin and Windows Defender, I suggest that you keep a copy of one of these AV/cleaners for emergency use if something ever slips by (not very likely however): Zemana free antimalware, Malwarebytes free antimalware, or Emsisoft free emergency scanner. They are listed in my order of preference. Do a weekly scan with it.

don't forget Freee Avira, which is the best for Win7/64 and above, I think.

If ClamAV is on the Virtual Machine, than it does not matters what you have installed on the host operating system.
If ClamAV is on the host operating system, than you must have Windows Defender atleast, because ClamAV will scan files only if the user manually sets a scan. You need a live protection anti virus like Windows Defender or AVG Antivirus, Avast, Avira, Norton, NOD32, etc.
