I have a private mail server that nobody except my server group can see and access for logging purposes and alerts.
For reasons of lame PHP mail() usage I have had to turn off authentication in the that mail server.
Subsequently ClamWin cannot "authenticate" and I can't turn that requirement in ClamWin off.

Is there a trick?

I don't know of anything you can do in this case except maybe mirror the server somehow somewhere that ClamWin is able to scan. Perhaps someone else can chime in. here.
