ClamWin does not cure infected files. Depending upon what the infected file option is configured to do in General Preferences, it will Report Only, Quarantine, or Remove. The default is Report Only in order to prevent loss of the system if a system file has a false positive detection. Users should verify files that ClamWin identifies as infected by uploading to Jotti or Virus Total. If several other AVs confirm an infection, then they can be Quarantined or Removed by changing the infected files option and re-scanning--or manually deleting the infected file.

Sometimes a tough virus can be quarantined or removed by ClamWin if a scan is done in Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly upon booting up until Safe Mode is entered and then start ClamWin and do a scan). Some viruses cannot hide when the computer is in Safe Mode. If ClamWin is unable to quarantine or remove an infected file, I suggest you do a scan with Malwarebytes' antimalware, Trend Micro's House Call, or Bitdefender's online scan. Try Malwarebytes and then the Bitdefender online scan.

A scan with one of the Linux rescue disks will usually remove any virus or rootkit for sure. Try the rescue disk from F-Secure or Bitdefender.

Thanks for the link. That is a new one. I would not depend upon it until you learn more about it and test it well.

It is much easier to identify a virus before it gets on your computer than to clean up an infection. Once you get infected, many viruses get deeply imbedded in the operating system, and it can be very hard to completely clean them. I think it is best to have one real-time virus scanner and another backup scanner that does not scan in real-time so you do not use too many computer resources. The free version of Malwarebytes is a very good backup scanner.

Clamwin is only an antiseptic it is not an anitbiotic. It cannot cure, but it can remove or quarantine a file effectively. It performs the basic functions only.

Once a virus gets on your computer, it can be tough to clean--even for one of the larger, major AV products. Even after cleaning, there can be non-active traces left behind, such as registry entries and data files. There can be over 100 infective agents from one virus infection. They often have multiple payloads. That is why it is better to prevent them from getting on your computer than to remove them afterwards.

Malwarebytes is good at removing the virus and its traces, and one of the free Linux rescue CDs will remove just about any infective components.
