At times a lot of ClamWin users have a bit of a problem updating. There are several things that can go wrong, and they are usually not the user's fault, such as one of the Clam AV mirror locations that handle the updates is out of snych with the others. I always try a couple of times in a row to update and then wait for a half hour or so and then try it again. It has always updated for me after that half hour.

If it still will not update after that half hour, delete the signature databases from your Clamwin virus database folder. You will see the location of your Virus database folder in ClamWin Preferences, File Locations tab. Delete three files--bytecode, daily, and main. Then run ClamWin and manually update the virus database--click on the ClamWin system tray icon and Download virus database update.

If that does not work, try uninstalling ClamWin and then reinstall it. If nothing works, thne please get back to us here.

Hi

I done both of things you suggested. Deleting the files didn't work so I uninstalled and downloded nd the same thing is happening.

How long have you been using ClamWin? Are you having any other problems that you have noticed? Are you using any other antivirus software (you should be using a real-time AV)? If so, can you update its signature database? If there are other problems besides ClamWin, you may have more than a ClamWin problem.

If you are not using other AV software, I suggest you visit Malwarebytes at https://www.malwarebytes.org/index.php on the web and see if you can dlownload their free version and then update its signature database. Accept the defaults and run a Quick Scan with it.

Then go to to https://www.confickerworkinggroup.org/infection_test/cfeyechart.html on the web and see if you can see all six images. You can page down below the images to interpret the results of this little test. If you can see all 6 images, click on each pane (one at a time) to vist its web site and then return. Do this for each web site to see if you can visit them. If you have any problems here, you are probably infected by the Conficker/Downadup worm and Malwarebytes was unable to clean it up. You can get some help here https://www.confickerworkinggroup.org/infection_test/cfeyechart.html on the web.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi
I have been using ClamWin for about a year and it has been fine.
I checked the website you suggested and could see al the pictures and visit the sites.
I do already have Maleware but that wont let me update either. Says there was an error.
I had some virus download itself onto my PC that took over the thing and I had to go into safe mode to delete it. Shortly after that I got incontact with Mozilla as my browser stopped working and they told me to download Spyware Terminator which I did, and this also added crawler toolbar.
The spyware terminator says its up to date.

Kind regards
Mad

I suspect your 'hosts' file has been altered
database.clamav.net ip is not 127.0.0.1 that is localhost

please open c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts with notepad and see if there are entries
lines starting with # are comments and ignored
you should only have 1 relevant line:
127.0.0.1 localhost

my full hosts file is:
Code:

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

127.0.0.1       localhost

Hi sherpya

Thanks for your reply. I did that and it as follows:

#block wga
127.0.0.1 mpa.one.microsoft.com

So do you think its that block wga at the bottom? How do I get rid of this, just delete?

Regards

It simply looks like Windows Genuine Advantage has been hacked on your machine to prevent Microsoft from checking it. It has nothing to do with ClamWin updates. Also, be aware that hacked software has a strong correlation with virus problems.

Since Malwarebytes will not update for you, that appears serious. Just in case, check your ClamWin internet updates folder. Make sure Enable Automatic Virus Database Updates is checked. That's about all I can suggest, unless Sherpya has something else. Otherwise, it is time for some serious cleaning of your machine.

Read all of your posts on the subject; did all of the things suggested; failed to update. The update occurs automatically on another system; not on this system even after disabling an existing AV. I downloaded the daily update from the site, but the system can't read the .cvd file. So, how do I get the latest updates?

Can you update the other existing AV?

If you are sure the system is clean, you might try to uninstall ClamWin (via Start, All Programs, ClamWin, Uninstall) and then re-install it and see if that helps.

Another thought: perhaps you need to allow a firewall to let ClamWin update--include it as a trusted file.

Can update the other AV; allowed ClamAV in firewall; uninstalled/reinstalled ClamWin several times; doesn't automatically update even after temporarily disabling the other AV and the firewall. What else? Any other way to update the database?? Thanks.
