I have a Pentium 4, 1.3 Ghz. CPU Computer with 512 Mb. of RAM and a new installation of Windows Millennium with all the available updates. I have Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 and Clamwin 0.96.2.1 installed. When clamwin scans the C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\e4w87bc4.default\Mail\mail.mailshack.com\Inbox file it locks the computer up so that I have to hold in the power button to reset it. It isn't just limited to the inbox file, it locks up on any folder file that has any mail in it. If the folder has all the mail deleted out and is compacted, then clamwin will scan the file just fine. I don't believe it has anything to do with the mail itself. It locks up on new mail or old mail Ive had saved for years that I know is clean of viruses. It doesn't matter if its a scheduled scan of the whole c: drive or a manual scan of just those files. I tried version 0.96 and it did the same thing. Version 0.95.3 works fine. Any ideas of what the problem could be?
Thanks,
Scott

Scott, I believe that Clam AV had a new milter (email filter) starting with Version .96 and that it was a significant change. It may not have had any effect on the newer computers, or perhaps it is only a problem with Thunderbird.. The ClamWin developers were probably not aware of this when they ported Clam V.96 over to ClamWin. I'm sure they will look into it since you pointed it out.

Has there been any update on this? I am looking after an old system with Windows ME so I am very limited to Anti virus programs that will run under ME. I have down loaded the Iso images for two stand alone Virus scanners from Kaspersky and Dr web so Ill try them to see if there is a problem. Does any one know of a personal firewall that will run under ME?
Thanks

It has been said that the last version of Zone Alarm that worked with Windows 98 was 6.1.744.001, but Zone Alarm 4.5 is known to work with Windows 98 for sure. The free version of Agnitum's Outpost firewall is also said to work on Windows 98 machines. It may be hard to get copies of these, however, because versions/ownership may have changed.
Actually, viruses are generally not targeting Win 98 now, so it may be safer than you think.
