Actually, there have not been very many signature updates lately. Christoph Cordes usually works full-time on sigmaking, and he does the bulk of the signatures, but he may be away for a while.

I've manually downloaded the main.cvd and daily.cvd and placed them in the appropriate folder. Guess I'd have to do this quite often until such time that the AV sw can do it by itself automatically.

I have upgraded to ClamWin 0.96.4 but still can download the data either automatically or manually. Done the same on another system which was fine, but it fails on this system. Other downloads and updating works fine except for the ClamWin one (sigh). I'll have to get another WORKING AV...

I had a problem like that updating this morning. It finally did so after a minute or so. Most likely there was a problem with the Clam mirror location that you were using. I would try updating again some time later. It usually works oaky for me then. Or just set ClamWin up for automatic updates and check it later.

I have to go in and delete the clamwin db to complete the new db download install. This is irritating as well as mistake prone. Today I did that again and ran a scan. I got a whole page of permission denied?? I have no idea what any of those files are or what they do, does anyone know or how to fix this? following is the copied report: Scan Started Sat Aug 20 18:35:49 2011

So, your ClamWin database is now, scans are operating correctly, but you have a large number of permission denied files that concern you. Permission denied files are usually okay, but you certainly have a bunch of them! Permission denied files are usually locked by the system and in use by some program/process when the scan is made.
You might try to do a scan in Safe Mode (F8-upon bootup until Safe Mode appears--choose Safe Mode only--no networking). They might not be in operation when in Safe Mode. If you can access the files, I suggest you try uploading a good sample of them--say 5 or so (one at a time) to Virus Total at https://www.virustotal.com/ on the web or Jotti at https://virusscan.jotti.org/en on the web. If a couple of these AVs see an infecton, I would believe it: AntiVir, Bitdefender, Kaspersky, Nod32, and Sophos. You might also see if you can identify the files as to what folder they are in--maybe do a search on a few to find them. Windows Taks Manager may also be able to help you identify some of the files. If there are any infections seen by Jotti/VirusTotal/ClamWin in Safe Mode, and you are unable to quarantine them, try downloading Malwarebytes free version of their antimalware scanner at https://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free and do a Quick Scan with it. Thanks Bob, I'll try what you suggested but all of these files are only part of my problem. Every time clam tries to update it fails, I have to go delete the current db and try again. Thats the irritating part.

Clam does not update that often. Today and yesterday there was only 1 update. Normally you will have maybe 5 or 6 updates. There will occasionally not be any as the sole primary updater is away or tied up. So if you have to update manually, you could update once per day--say about 5 pm or so European time. Maybe your update problem is fixed now. There can be some update problems unique to older or networked machines.
At this point, all I can say is make sure you have configured ClamWin for automatic updates, configure for a proxy server if you use one on the internet, make sure your firewall allows ClamWin to update, verify any ISP numbers that your Hosts file is blocking to make sure it is not ClamWin updates, and check with your ISP to see if there are any problems they are aware of. To South Pacific - the people here at Clamwin are so wonderful, I thought I might pay back a little by helping you.
I, too, have 98SE. For your immediate problem, get the latest version of Spybot Search and Destroy. It has always had a shredder, but the latest has one that you can make a shortcut of and just get the shredder, rather than the whole program. If you're POSITIVE you want to be rid of those files, use the S&D shredder on the files you have in quarantine. They're gone, baby gone! If you're prone to malware, and feel you can be careful enough in deleting files, make the Recycle Bin delete files without putting them in the bin at all. That's good enough most of the time, but if you have something you know you don't want and it MIGHT be infected, use the shredder. As for Norton, I've been that route, too. The version I had was near the 2000 version, too. When I tried to uninstall it, it left TONS of registry entries. Too many to count. In addition it slowed my system down to a crawl. Next time I had to format C, I was finally rid of them - most, anyway. Most of those entries are there for the SOLE purpose of getting you to buy stuff. It's a despicable program, and it missed malware that the free av programs caught. I've been told by experts that you shouldn't have more than one AV app installed at any given time. I'm no geek, but I feel that is good advice. Before trying another AV, uninstall the first one first. Uninstall Norton, as well as you can, using its own uninstaller. Don't just delete its folders. If you can get rid of Norton and all its registry entries, after you install the OS, immediately make a backup of your registry. I have a superb app, called TweakAll, which lets you back up the whole registry and replace it whenever you want. It also backs up the important system files. There is a commercial version of TweakAll, bought from the originator, but it is inferior to the original. Even so, I think it has this backup feature. Always backup your registry whenever you make major installations, because the backup will return you only to the installs that were already THERE when you made the backup. The newer ones will need to be reinstalled, or else they may not work right - or at all. If I knew how to send you the original TweakAll - which was freeware - I would. It's great, and it's one of the big reasons I haven't upgraded my OS. When I tried WinXP, I hated it, and TweakAll wouldn't install. I LOVE my TweakAll! Maybe you can ask sherpla or GuitarBob to ask me to upload the freeware version, so they can offer it to you. If they say it's okay, I will. There's a whole LOT of good stuff that won't work on an OS above 98SE. But I am looking into using Ubuntu. It can let you retain 98 in another partition, or just tell BIOS to bootup from the CD, and I like that. Ubuntu supposedly is able to let you update to the most recent online apps, like Firefox, videos and bunches of others. Check it out. How to HAVE your 98SE and USE it, too! If Ubuntu works for me, I'll use it only for when I go online, and use 98SE for games and apps that I love so much. I think it's merely a matter of a reboot to switch from one to the other. No big deal. Of course, if you DO use Ubuntu to get updated versions of things, those same things will probably NOT work any more in 98. So don't expect them to. I haven't tried Ubuntu just yet, tho my expert made a CD of it for me. I guess I'm just a little bit timid about it. But I'll do it. Hope I've been of some help. |
