Download the free version of Malwarebytes' Antimalware program at https://www.malwarebytes.org/index.php on the web. Do a normal Quick scan with it. Then get into Windows Safe Mode (F8 repeatedly upon bootup) and run another Quick scan in Safe Mode. Follow the instructions.
Uninstall Avast and install Microsoft's free Security Essentials AV/antimalware. It's pretty good, but it may not help with a deeply-embedded malware. Keep it if it works!
If that doesn't work, try an online scan with Eset's (NOD32) online scanner.
The next step before you reformat/reinstall everything would be to use a rescue disk scan. I like Dr. Web's or Kaspersky's.
See the ClamWin Antimalware page for help with this and other sources of help.
Good luck!
