Win98SE OS - Virus Database Update using Clamwin .94.0 works FINE! Upgrade to .94.1 Virus Database Update doesn't work at all...!
Tried to check the "processes" using Process Explorer for each version to determine any differences - Don't have the knowledge/intelligence to capture the the files that are used to present them here for review.
Does anyone have a real, understandable answer to this issue?
I just love ClamWin aka "Geeks Gone Wild"!

Hello,
Freshclam.exe is the application Clamwin uses for updating the virus DB. Try to see when you launch the update is this application is running. If you are behind a firewall make sure that it is enabling freshclam to access the web.
In case maybe uninstall and reinstall the latest version could be the best.
If not successful try to post here the update log for further check.
Regards,
Antonio

Is your response an automated reply?
Of course Freshclam.exe is running, otherwise .94.0 wouldn't have worked!
Of course the firewall is permitting Freshclam.exe, otherwise .94.0 wouldn't have worked!
And yes, I have installed and uninstalled a complete version, as well as, an upgrade version of .94.1.
My guess: this is a communications coding issue - someone "dropped the ball" between .94.0 & .94.1.

Hello rr1165,
Sorry for not having been of help. Unfortunately I am not a tech so I am trying to provide support according to my (little) knowledge.
Maybe the developers (Alch/Sherpya) can provide further help on your issue.
Regards,
Antonio

Antonio got it right! See this post: https://forums.clamwin.com/viewtopic.php?t=2084&highlight=windows++updates .
Try a search on the ClamWin forum before you post. I just searched on "Windows 98 updates" and found it.

What did he get right? There is no definitive answer as to "WHY"!
I did search - a lot - and it was the post that you're referring to that convinced me to stay with .94.0 - BUT - the question still remains: "WHY" doesn't .94.1 work when .94.0 does? DOH!

I believe he got it right about the complete uninstall/reinstall if you are running Win 98! Additionally, seems like I recall there were some changes made to the previous version of ClamWin to fix a bug relating to updating (communications). If you haven't tried it, try the uninstall/reinstall and see if that fixes it. Let us know the results.
If that doesn't work, perhaps Alch or Sherpya can lend a hand. Please have patience. ClamWin is an all-volunteer effort, including this forum.

GuitarBob, I am sure you mean well. But had you taken the time to look at/read the third post it would have been apparent that I had done the uninstall/install "thing" since Antonio S. said the same thing you're saying, just sooner.

Well, I guess we'll have to wait for a developer to drop by then. By the way, when you uninstalled/reinstalled, what is the Internet Update option that you have now in your ClamWin configuration? Is it set to Enable Automatic Virus Database Updates with a frequency/time that you want?

I manually update ClamWin.
The DB didn't update .94.1 during the initial loading of the entire application nor when I used the upgrade to .94.0
Hopefully "HELL" won't freeze over before someone does a file/process compare on a Win98SE OS machine running these two versions .94.0 and .94.1., determines where the differences are in the communications capability, FreshClam.exe, and resolves the issue(s).

How about it, ClamWin Windows 98 users? I know there are a few here. Are you using ClamWin verson .94.1 and is it updating okay for you? I would think we would have heard from you by now if there was a substantial problem.

The definitive solution as to how to upgrade/update from .94.0 to 94.1 on a Win98SE OS machine - NOTE: This solution worked for me - period. Hopefully, it will help, direct, or suggest alternatives to others who may be having similar DB updating issues with ClamWin on a Win98SE OS machine.
I suspected this was a communication component issue aka FreshClam.exe. That's exactly what it was!
FreshClam 94.0 116KB 9/5/08 ------- FreshClam 94.1 124KB 11/4/08
With 94.0 installed I copied FreshClam 94.0 to another folder, downloaded the 94.1 update, and replaced the 94.1 FreshClam with the 94.0 FreshClam. The DB update worked perfectly and it now indicates that I am running 94.1 with the current DB Level 38.
My advice to GuitarBob, Antonio S. and developers Alch/Sherpya -- "Don't quit your day job"!

I'll test it on a win98 before releasing 0.95, I think it's useless to debug 0.94 right now

Perhaps rr1165 would care to join the ClamWin beta testers forum--you would have a good tester there who would look after the interest of Win 98 users.
