Following advice on the WIn98 section of this forum, I checked the firwall settings in ZoneAlarm. I found I had to add db.local.clamav.net in order for the update to work. I did, and it worked.
Thanks for the suggestion. Too bad it wasn't also mentioned in the non-Win98 section of virus database updates.

My apologies for the fact that I started a new posting on this without seeing that many others have the same / similar problem. My excuse is that it was late at night and I was tired from babysitting a none responsive computer (or rather, the program is not responding to the download request). Much of what is in these postings is above my head so I dont know what I should do now. Is there any action I should take, or do I wait for another version of ClamWin which can download the updates on my W98se machine? I will now turn off my failing attempt to download the updates and hope my computer does not become victim to an attack!

I haven't had any problems running version 88.4 (and the two previous versions as well) on my Win 98SE system, so there is probably something unique to your system/configuration that caused the problem.

It looks like I am having the same basic problem with the newest realease 88.4 (which is going to be the first one of all the realeases I am trying to install).
I have Win98SE, and I can't download the Virus Database. Whenever I try to do so (even right after the installation), I see the window poping up and see only this message :
"ClamAV update process started at Tue Aug 15 19:42:18 2006"
I would be really grateful if one of you found a way for me to update the database.
Thanks again!

Zone Alarm and other firewalls designate each individual software program that uses the Web (for updating, etc.) as Okay to contact the Web, Deny Web contact, or Ask you for instructions. If the default firewall configuration is set up to ask you if it's okay when a new program uses the Web, you should have been notified the first time ClamWin tried to contact the Web to update so you could tell it what to do with ClamWin.
There is a menu option in Zone Alarm that shows all your programs that operate on the Web. Find that menu option and label ClamWin as okay to use the Web.

Thanks GuitarBob,
But this would have been really helpful if I had ZoneAlarm. I am however behind a router. Maybe I need to forward some ports in order for the program to acess the server. If this is the case, can anyone tell me ports to forward?
Thanks

Zanco,
The update uses the normal HTTP port (80), so if you can access this website, you should be able to access the updatees too.

Thank you everybody for your answers, but none of them seem to work.
In the end I decided that I will update my database manuallly everyday.
So if anyone with Win98SE is having the same problem, the thing to do (if they want to update manually) is to go to
https://www.clamav.net/
then Download the two files main.cvd and daily.cvd to the directory: C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\All Users\.clamwin\db
I hope it helps.
