Hi all. First post here Smile .

I want to drop Symantec at the office next year and install https://w32.clamav.net/ ClamAV on our Windows 2000 Server and https://www.clamwin.com/ ClamWin on all of our XP Pro workstations.

I guess I'm just looking for any advice or things I should prepare myself for before taking the plunge. Any steps to take ahead of time? Any guides to review to get prepared? Any pitfalls to watch out for?

According to this page:
https://www.clamav.net/ https://www.clamav.net/
ClamAV is designed especially for e-mail scanning on mail gateways. We don't have a mail server, I'm looking for something to protect the data. I'm assuming this product will still suit my needs even though I understand it doesn't have a real time scanner?

Thanks, Dave

I wouldn't depend upon ClamWin alone in a production environment like in an office unless internet access is restricted to just a few machines that have real-time scanners. Without a real-time/on-access scanner, ClamWin is still beta software, which should never be used in a production environment.

Thanks for the input GuitarBob. I was thinking about complimenting it with WinPatrol and SpywareTerminator but perhaps I should hold off until a real time scanner is implemented.

I was thinking about doing this in Nov 2009 when our latest Symantec subscription expires so I have almost a full year to wait and see if a real time scanner is added Smile .

I use WinPatrol myself, but it has a limited feature set. It's not much use against backdoors, and it will not alert you to some virus strains. There's really no substitute for an on-access scanner with frequently updated signatures and a useful, common-sense set of heuristics.

Perhaps the addition of real time scanning provided by SpywareTerminator would help in the short term?

Anyone out there using a setup similar to this?

I'm looking at implementing the following setup:

- SpywareTerminator with ClamAV for real time protection
- WinPatrol for behaviour blocking
- A dedicated SmoothWall firewall/router up front to protect the entire network. ClamAV is included in the most recent version of SmoothWall and with the addition of a few mods you can enhance it's ability to check for viruses, malware, etc. Dans Guardian is a web content filter and is one of the mods available. The POP3 proxy that's included in the default SmoothWall install allows you to scan incoming emails using the POP3 protocol. There's also a mod to check emails if you're using the SMTP protocol.

The SmoothWall is the key and I have high expectations that this setup would be very dependable. The TBird add-on would also be a possibility Wink .
