I am running Clamwin ver 0.93 on my Windows XP SP1 laptop. It is set to run at 2:00am so when I start the laptop in the morning it runs. The problem is it usually uses between 80 - 99% of the CPU and never seems to end. This goes on for hours. When I kill the process to be able to use the machine, I get a message that a virus was detected but no details.

This is what the reports says:

Scan Started Wed Aug 13 08:45:56 2008
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*** Scanning Programs in Computer Memory ***
*** Memory Scan: using ToolHelp ***

*** Scanned 25 processes - 387 modules ***
*** Computer Memory Scan Completed ***

Any suggestions?

I don't like having to kill the scan.

Thanks

Hello,
Presently Clamwin is built in a way it is taking as much CPU as available during scan (process: clamscan.exe) so there is not no much one can do.
However, to improve scanning times you may try:

- Schedule (or manually activate) scan of single folders which are most likely to harbour malware at different times(namely: C:\Documents and Setting; C:\Windows; C:\windows\system32; C:\program files)
- Set Clamwin to scan only particular file types only. This can be done on Preferences/Filters/Scan only matching filenames. You can google for 'dangerous files extensions' which can be put into the list of files to be scanned. I am currentyl using one which I found at https://www.lancs.ac.uk/iss/a-virus/banned.htm.
To the list I have aded .dll, .jpg, .jpeg and most common Office extensions. By doing this scanning times should be reduced (presently my 160 GB HD is scanned in about 45/50 mins).

If you are not using a resident AV beside Clamwin (you should if you surf the web as Clamwin is working only as an on demand scanner) make periodic scans of your machine using online scanners (some of them are listed on the Anti Malware resources on Clamwin site).

For what concerns the report you have posted it seems you have run the scan of running processes on machine; this should not take a long time time to finish (when I run it on my XP SP3 machine it takes about 3 mins) and should show also a scan summary like this:

----------- SCAN SUMMARY -----------
Known viruses: 394120
Engine version: 0.93.1
Scanned directories: 0
Scanned files: 417
Infected files: 0

Data scanned: 183.00 MB
Time: 189.265 sec (3 m 9 s)
--------------------------------------
Completed
--------------------------------------

Try a scan of a single file/folder and check if the scan report is showing complete results. Then set up file filters on preferences and run a complete scan of Hard drive; scanning times should improve remarkably.

Regards,
Antonio
