Is TLS authentication supported by ClamWin's email alerts ?
If not, is there a "workaround" ?

I'm trying to configure ClamWin to send an email alert on virus detection.
The email service provider is Google.
The SMTP server is smtp.gmail.com and it requires TLS authentication.
The port can be 465 or 587.

The configuration screen "Email Alerts" in "ClamWin Preferences" doesn't have an option for authentication.
I tried anyway filling the info in all the fields, and then click on "Send Test Email".
ClamWin seems to hang up. I tried both ports supported by gmail.

Thanks in advance for any help !
Edgardo.

tls is not an authentication, it's a transport layer
email authentication is another thing
and google needs both

clamwin supports only the authentication part, the ssl connection with the email server can be implemented
since python transport supports it, but I'm not sure about the effort
need to ask to alch

a "trick": if your mail is hosted on gmail e.g. the To: field is something@gmail.com,
you can use one of these as smtp server without login and password:

gmail.com MX 10 alt2.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com
gmail.com MX 50 gsmtp147.google.com
gmail.com MX 50 gsmtp183.google.com
gmail.com MX 5 gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com
gmail.com MX 10 alt1.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com

(perhaps these address can be changed by google in the future)

I've found an helper module https://www.aleph-null.tv/downloads/ssmtplib.py https://www.aleph-null.tv/downloads/ssmtplib.py

ref https://www.aleph-null.tv/downloads/ssmtplib.py https://www.aleph-null.tv/downloads/ssmtplib.py

perhaps the example is a bit wrong, login() should go after ehlo()

Thanks for the tips and explanation !

The "modules" option is too much for me. I'm not good with programs. I'm a volunteer helping setup a few machines at a school.

Sending using the alternative gmail smtp servers worked very well !
The school's email is hosted at Google.
This is how I filled up the fields in the "Email Alerst" tab of "ClamWin Preferences" window:

Mail Server: gsmtp183.google.com
(These three server names also worked: alt2.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com, gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com, alt1.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com)
(This server name didn't work: gsmtp147.google.com)
