ClamWin is presently an on-demand file scanner - it scans files only when you tell it to, although you can set up regular scans (as many as you want) in its Preferences. A real-time (on access or resident) scanner is under development that automatically scans files when they are accessed on your computer, but it is not yet available. There is an alpha version 1.0, but it needs work before it is ready for beta testing. There are only two ClamWin developers working on it in their free time. My unofficial, personal guess is it will be ready for users by the end of 2008. Visit the ClamWin Web site to see how you can help the project.
If you are careful about surfing the Web, (no porn sites, game sites, crack sites) and scan all downloaded files before running them, you are probably safe with ClamWin, Windows Firewall, and Ad-Aware SE. If you have the free version of Ad-Aware SE, it doesn't scan in real-time, so you could replace it with the free Windows Defender program, which scans in real-time and is a decent scanner. The free Spyware Blaster program is always good to have because it protects Internet Explorer and FireFox browsers from hijackers and many bad Web sites and doesn't use any computer resources. If you do surf dangerously or if you are paranoid about security, you could also use one of the free antiviruses--AVG (Grisoft), AntiVir (Avira), or Avast (Alwil). ClamWin does not conflict with any other security products because it is not a resident scanner. I am using AVG now and expect to do so until ClamWin version 1.0 becomes available to us users. To speed up scanning times, you can configure ClamWin's Filters to only scan for dangerous file extensions. There are about 60 or so file extensions that are most likely to be used by viruses, so you don't have to scan every file on your computer. You can do a search on the Web for "dangerous file extensions." Microsoft also has some information about its file types. Regards, |

howdy.
SpywareBlaster protects Flock too, another Gecko browser that is for social networking sites. Also be aware that there is a rogue named Spyware Blaster; note the separation. The real SpywareBlaster from JavaCool is writ as one word. SpywareBlaster, the real one from JavaCool Spyware Blaster, the rogue. My source for this info is the Rogue list at Spyware Warrior https://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm https://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm I have used all the major paidware and freeware antivirus programs and now on one of my XP Pro machines I have all freeware, on the other, this one in use now, a mix of free and paid. AVG is down a bit now in my opinion and according to tests that I recommend you search out if you wish. Avira Antivir Personal Free is better than over half of the antiviruses including the paid ones. Don't be dismayed by its lack of email scanning because on opening a program, if malware, it stomps on it - including Trojans, worms, viruses, and other malware. If you use Outlook Express it is not advisable to scan email files anyway. I dont know it that is true about Mozilla Thunderbird, Foxmail, or Pegasus mail. In order of efficacy: Avira, Avast!, then AVG maybe, for the free antiviruses. Avira also plays nice with other security apps. I downloaded ClamWin as backup/second opinion to Eset Smart Security which I run with Sandboxie and SpywareBlaster. For a long time I protected my computer with ClamWin, SpywareBlaster, Trojan Remover, and Windows (XP Pro) Firewall; although fact that I used Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird contributed to my not getting infected. |
