Hi b0ne!
Thanks for your answer, but I'm looking for a REALLY GOOD online antivirus checker ![]() Could you please answer me another query? I spent several hours browsing the net, trying to find a website where I could make an online checking and I found one called "infectedornot.com" or something, which apparently is owned by Panda, do you know it? Is it reliable? Thanks in advance for your help! ![]() |

Well, really good is some what of a qualitative statement. I've never paid much attention to the online ones because they want to install a bunch of crappy activex controls in your browser, then spam you with advertisements that you need to buy the desktop version in order for it to do anything useful for you. Outside of that opinion of mine, here are the vendors I view with significantly better than average detection: Avira AntiVir and Kaspersky. I believe Grisoft AVG still may be free, as is Awil Avast. Avira AntiVir has a free version which should do the job quite nicely for you. |

I'll vote with bOne. AVG free from Grisoft, AntiVir Personal Edition Classic from Avira, and Avast from Alwil are all about as good as you can get for free. AVG has been improved a bit--the paid version found about 93%/94% of the viruses in the recent AVG Comparatives test. AntiVir is probably the best of the three--the paid version found in the HIGH 90% in the same test. Avast is probably not as good as the other two--the paid version found about 90% of the viruses in the same test. The free versions are probably not quite as good as the paid versions, but they use the same basic engines, and they are good enough for most of us users. These are the only three free commercial AV programs I would consider--besides ClamWin, which at the present time, is best used as a backup scanner.
Keep in mind that NO AV software will find every piece of malware out there. Your best protection is probably a "layer" consisting of firewall, antivirus, antispyware, and maybe a HIPs or Host Intrusion Protection Software program like Prevyx or Cyberhawk (although HIPS tends to "take over" your compter to a certain extent). As a last resort, you might include a hard disk "rollback" program like Go Back, Norton Ghost, or Back On Track. I don't have much respect for the Windows XP System Restore function--some viruses can reside there, and it can't restore everything. Don't be turned off by the paid software--if it keeps you safe, it's worth the price. Regards, |
