At present, ClamWin does not have a real-time scanner (also called a resident or on-access scanner). It is developed on a volunteer basis and is just an on-demand scanner (it scans files when you select a file/directory/drive to scan), but you can schedule automatic scans. Because of this, it should be used by most people as a back-up scanner to a real-time scanner--such as Avira's AntiVir, the AVG scanner, or Alwil's Avast scanner--especially if you use the web a lot to download, play games, or surf. There are free versions available of these three proven scanners. Microsoft's free Moro scanner to be released second half of 2009 should also be a decent one.
It's always good to have a second scanner, and ClamWin does a good job in that role. ClamWin uses the Clam AV engine and signatures. Clam signatures are updated often (see the hourly update option under Interned updates). Clam also has an ongoing development program and is improved regularly. If you are a careful surfer, you could use ClamWin as your antivirus (with regular daily scans), along with a firewall, a behavior blocker, and antispyware, but most people shouldn't take that chance until/unless a ClamWin real-time scanner is developed. Someone volunteered to work on the real-time scanner a month ago, but there has been no news since then. Regards, |
