New ClamAV 88.1 Review

I have had time to install and run the new version on about 10 different
machines. Here are my observations.

1) New native compile is only sometimes faster....sometimes it is slower.
I run in "Display infected files only mode", so I believe the slowdown
might be because now each filename is displayed when being scanned.
My machines do not have high end graphics card, since they are
used mostly for business applications.
Any chance to add an option to selectly suppress the filename
being scanned? Since I generally only look at the end of the
scan report, could you ever make an option to suppress the
moving graphic on the left? The graphics do slow down
the scan process. (I am in the process of running some
command line scans vs graphical to determine the overhead
of the GUI - I will report back the results when the done)

2) The new version of winclam detects some suspect files that
the older versions did not. They were all in .zip files. Did
the search strategy within zip files change? Please also note that
when an infected file is found within a zip, it does not report
which file is suspect. It is a bug or on purpose?

3) The web update function does not work on any of my win98se
machines. I have reported on this issue in depth on another thread.

I consider the above issues minor, but worth mentioning. In general
I am impressed by the new release, and will be using it exclusively
in the future.

Thank you for all your time and efforts on this project!

Regards,

P.S. - Most my scans time seem to be in .ZIP archives that I have.
I have not looked at the source, but does this compile include any
of the open source assembler .zip decompression algorithms that
are available? If not, are there any plans in the future to use the
faster zip decompression libraries?

clamav uses zziplib to scan zips, there are no asm optimizations (only few optimizations in zlib).
Archive scan is in any case slow Sad

alch I think you may add an option to pass or not --show-progress in next release, the output in clamwin windows should work
in both cases.

1) To prevent every filename's scan progress I put the text
"--quiet" into setups advanced tab for clamscan options.

My testing scan then ran faster.

Still looking for a way to turn off the left hand graphic.

2) Please also note that when an infected file is found within a zip, it does
not report which file is suspect....I have not found a good work around for this.

I have had to unzip to a temp directory and re-run clamav against that directory.

3) This issue has been resolved, see the new clamwin 88.1.1 patch for a fix.

I have investigated the open source asm zip libraries, they do exist, the issue
would be on of integration. I might investigate more.

Thanks everyone for all the help.
