I seem to have two versions of clamwin. ClamWin and WinClam AV Shield, which is integrated with Spyware Terminator. Can anyone tell me the difference?

Spyware Terminator comes with the option to integrate a built-in version of Clam Antivirus with its resident antispyware software. ClamWin also uses the Clam Antivirus engine, but it is not yet a resident antivirus program. Therefore, you don't need ClamWin if you use Spyware Terminator with this option, so you can uninstall ClamWin.

How effective would you say clamwin is, compared to Nod32?

NOD32 is a good, well-rounded antivirus. It doesn't use as much memory as most other antivirus software. It has few false positives and good heuristics. ClamWin isn't a resident antivirus like NOD32, and it doesn't yet have much in the way of heuristics, so it will not be able to find a lot of the high-tech malware--like polymorphic stuff and rootkits. In terms of just file scanning, however, the results on the Jotti scanning service show that Clam/ClamWin is just as good at spotting the general spectrum of malware. In addition, Clam is updated more frequently than NOD32. I used NOD32 for most of 2007 (along with ClamWin). I did not renew NOD32, however, because they were secretive about a potential exploit in it and did not publicize a patch they had for it. Because it is pretty good, they also don't devote as much attention to signature updates. It's an excellent antivirus, however.

if you use ClamWin by itself, until we get a resident version, set it for hourly updates, make several scans each day, pair it with WinPatrol or a behaviour blocker, and use a good resident antispyware program.

Spyware Terminator uses the last version (0.92.1) of Clamwin, but in the past it was possible to replace libclamav.dll and the other two files by simply copying the latest version from clamwin into the winclamavshiel folder from Spyware Terminator and renaming the libclamav.dll to clamav.dll. But keep the libclamav.dll there as well!!!
But to my experience with Spywareterminator and e. g. Moon Secure Antivirus, they don't have the same detection rate during a scan as Clamwin does. I don't know the reason, perhaps it is a matter of how they have implemented the clamav engine. And I am not sure if 0.93 of the clamwin engine does really work with Spyware Terminator because of the new signature update process in 0.93. However I don't get any error message and the clamav server is shown in the SPT window during a manual scan.

Perhaps somebody could post his experiences here. Spyware Terminator is a good supplement to Clamwin as long as the team hasn't finished its realtime monitor.

Moon Secure Antivirus is a good initial project, but their scanner is far from a reliable solution for antivirus protection and it doesn't detect viruses in a sufficient manner.

I can exactly confirm yr. post. I was using Spyware Terminator together with ClamAV integration but it seems it does not update with same frequency as Clamwin does. Moreover, the integration of ST with ClamAv makes scanning operation much slower.
I am using new ST just as an antispyware, coupling it with Clamwin for virus and Malware detection. For real time protection I am also using Avira Antivir as resident virus scanner.
My conclusion is exactly as yours.
''Spyware Terminator is a good supplement to Clamwin as long as the team hasn't finished its realtime monitor''.
