The ClamWin developers say they can't presently run scans as a Windows service because of the programming language in the current "legacy" version. Version 1.0 (when it becomes available--no release date) will enable the service, feature on-access scans, and other refinements.

Hello Bob,
WHEN will version 1.0 come? My guess is the clamwin team will loose the connection to the other clam developers. The Moon Secure Antivirus team shows a very reliable solution, modest to cpu power. And they are releasing (or bugfixing) a new version every two weeks. Don't forget Spyware Terminator with their clam on access solution. I am using both of them on different machines. I am a big fan of the clamwin software, but they should release V1.0 very soon. Otherwise they could loose a big amount of their fans. Why don't they try to cooperate with the MSA team? Regards Tom |

The ClamWin developers haven't announced a release date for version 1.0. They are taking their time in development to do it right. I understand there is an Alpha version, but it 's not ready for testing, and testing will take some time once a beta version is ready. Perhaps Moon has frequent updates because they are not as careful or don't test it enough before release.
AV companies seem to be cooperating a bit more now--but it's primarily with regard to malware signatures. The small AVs need help in building up their signature databases to include All types of malware--not just viruses. Clam/ClamWin are both Open Source. I believe Moon AV is also, but there might be a difference of philosophy there. I think Clam is quite a bit ahead of Moon. Clam AV is coming along very well. It has over 160,000 signatures, and many of them are now generic--enabling it to spot multiple instances of malware with one signature. It still lacks sophisticated heuristics, but as a pure file scanner, it is now as good as a few of the commercial AVs in detecting new malware. ClamWin benefits from Clam's development too. If anything, there needs to be more cooperation between ClamWin and Clam AV. Regards, |
