As long as ClamWin is not resident, it seems to me that signature updates don't really matter until you scan. At that point they do matter. If there was such an option to update before scanning, it would reduce Clam's bandwidth if enough users take advantage of it. Perhaps you could even eliminate most of the other update options--especially the hourly updates.
