I have been using Clamwin with hMailServer for a long time now. I recently upgraded to hMs version 4.4. I can configure hMs to use Clamwin to scan incoming emails. The problem I am running into now is that ClamWin's ClamScan takes up all of my processors resources. If one email is coming in, Clamscan uses 99% of the processors resources. If three emails come through, three instance of Clamscan are run and each takes 33 percent. I tried setting the Clamscan priority to low from within ClamWins Preferences/Advanced dialog. No affect. Clamscan still registers as a Normal Priority process. I tried to change the priority from Task Manager and received a dialog stating that access is denied. I've also noticed that it takes an incredibly long time for Clamscan to check a 1 KB email. I would say around 2 or 3 seconds. I've been told to run ClavAV-W32 with RunClamd.exe because it uses Clamscand.exe and thus faster. I tried to do that but so far have had no luck getting it to actually scan. What can I do to get ClamWin's Clamscan to use less of my processor time?

There's a two fold problem here. Clamscan has to reload the definition set every time it runs, which takes a fricking LONG time. That is the main reason of the 100% cpu usage. The other smaller part is that scanning the file is fairly intensive, but it is not much compared to loading the definitions.

I believe sherpya is working on getting a service to run in the background which will only load the definitions once, so you won't get nailed by having to reload them constantly.

Any Idea on when that happens?

Can't really use it for scanning eMail servers the way it is.

Is there a fix for clamscan hijacking of 100% cpu power?
I will have to find another scanner if not. Any suggestions?

The very next release will drastically improve CPU utilization.

Version 0.91.1 is now available. Let the ClamWin team know if it does a good job for you.
