I thought you might find some recent statistics regarding the scanning ability of Clam/ClamWin interesting. The stats are kept up by Oak Island Trading Company, which isn't directly in the antivirus/security industry, but they are certainly interested in it. They scan viruses they find with VirusTotal and they keep statistics for instances when 25% or less of the VirusTotal scanners find malware in their transmitted files. They claim that this shows the ability of antivirus software to find new viruses. If you check the link below, you will see that Clam finds new viruses about 14% of the time. This beats AhnLab, The Hacker, both scanners from eTrust, and it is within a couple of points of Authentium, Fprot, and UNA. Also note that Clam finds 1% of the viruses with heuristics--probably due to generic signatures rather than real heuristics. I think what this really indicates is that ClamAV is doing a pretty good job developing/keeping up malware signatures--better than many commercial antivirus programs.
