Hello,

I was wondering if clamwin was meant (in the future) as a fully working antivirus or is it meant as just an email scanner ?

Thanks

Below is a link to a roadmap for ClamWin. You will see that on-access scanning is a goal. There's no strict timetable, but work is ongoing. Help is appreciated--see how you can help on the ClamWin Web site.

You asked what about the future for ClamWin and whether or not it is intended to be a complete antivirus program. The link I referenced for you consists of several pages which explain the future development of ClamWin.

One page diagrams and explains the new user interface (GUI) ClamWin will have. Another page diagrams and explains the scanning service it will have. If you get into the explanation, you will see that the scanning service will consists of an On-Demand service (like the current file scanner) and a full-time On-Access/Resident scanning service. The Filter Driver page isn't available unless you can log on, but it provides more information about the On Access service.

I wanted you to see that development efforts are/have been underway to turn ClamWin into a commercial-grade antivirus program. Unfortunately, there aren't enough developers, so it takes time, but they are pretty far along and hope to have something for us this year--hopefully with version 1.0, and they are in version 0.90.1.1 now.

You might look at the "How You Can Help" side menu on the ClamWin home page: www.Clamwin.com. I'm sure they could use any kind of help. Some nonprogramming users have contributed a little money, and others try to free up the two primary developers by answering questions in this forum when possible. At this stage, I think they are probably right in the middle of developing the real-time scanner and it might be too late for additional help just now. They know to ask if there's something they need from us users.

I hope it's modular, in case I want a on demand scanner only. I've considered using commercial products for on-demand but they would still have services and drivers running.

It will be a complete rewrite. There will be the option to use it on-demand only. Many ClamWin users want to continue using it like that. The real time scanner will run as a service just like most antivirus software now.
