I wish the documentation on the website mentioned some of the more common file extensions, and why or why not they are listed in "Preferences | Filters | Exclude matching file names".

In particular, I don't understand why
*.tbb
*.pst
are listed -- What are they?
I don't understand why *.txt or *.png are *not* listed -- they're not executable, are they?

For example, something like this:

To speed scans up, you can configure ClamWin to skip over certain files using "Preferences | Filters | Exclude matching file names".

The default setting for "Exclude matching file names" lists the following extensions because they are not executable files, and so cannot possibly infect any other file:
*.log -- a text "log", showing the progress of some program. Some of them grow quite large.
*.nsf -- either a NES music file, or a Lotus Notes database.
*.ntf -- Lotus Notes database design template
...

ClamWin also scans archive files. Archive files are harmless in their current state, but they can contain any kind of file, including infected executable files.
*.zip
*.tar
....

Executable files have many different extensions, including
*.exe -- machine language program
*.com -- machine language program
*.vbs -- visual basic script
*.dll -- machine language dynamic link library
*.bat -- DOS batch file
*.doc -- Microsoft Word document, which might include a macro virus
...

These are mailboxes (TheBat! and Outlook). Clamwin would delete the whole mailbox should it find a virus.
