Can the scanner be configured to not open the serial port?

When I try to use a terminal emulator via the serial port on my Windows XP Professional X64 Edition system, I can't open the serial port. ClamWin has it open. If I exit ClamWin, it works fine. What reason is there for the virus scanner to open the serial port? Please tell me there's a way to disable this.
Thanks!

I'm not a developer, so I don't know why ClamWin would use a serial port. Doesn't sound right. If you are sure the problem is due to ClamWin, you might try disabling the automatic update (first) or stop using a proxy server (second) and see what happens.

clamwin opens the serial port? very unlikely iirc portmon from sysinternals should show you who locks the serial port

Unfortunately, PortMon encounters an error when run on the X64 Edition. However, Process Explorer (SysInternals) works just fine. It was Process Explorer which revealed that ClamWin had open \device\serial0. I attempted to get Process Explorer to "close handle", but it had no effect. Once I exited ClamWin, I was able to open the serial port.
I restarted the system in question less than an hour ago. At this point, ClamWin doesn't have the serial port open, but the scheduled scan hasn't been run yet, either. I'll report back in once I see the serial port opened again for no reason.
