I noticed that a ClamWin memory scan turned up 44 processes, but Windows Task Manager says there are 54 processes. Does anyone know why the difference--or should you even compare them?

some system processes are skipped since they are not really like other processes, also other system processes cannot be scanned if you are not administrator since the scanner needs to enable debug privileges, I have the suspect that on windows xp home system processes cannot be scanned even by an Administrator but I'll investigate later, when I'll back

Thanks for the link. It looks like the program might be very helpful. I frequently find a file locked when I try to uninstall software.
