No, you can't clean a virus-infected file with ClamWin.

You can either put it in Quarantine or remove it.

Check with some of the Web sites of large antivirus vendors. Sometimes they will provide information about what you need to do to fix a virus. Some of these vendors even have fixes for specific viruses, but I don't know how good they are--should be pretty good if they know what the virus does. If you can find out what the virus does yourself, you may be able to delete those files that have been affected by the virus and restore them with good clean files. You will always have your clean program files on CD to restore, and this is when regular backups of data on CD can also come in handy!

If you have GoBack or a similar hard drive restoration program, you may be able to go back and restore your hard drive to the way it was prior to the infection if you can identify when you acquired the infection.

Question

What is it that you are not understanding?

What the "Quarantine" is? Well, it's simply a folder to which you move infected files to prevent them from executing automatically on startup.

Or is it anything else you don't understand in my post?

What he means is that ClamWin only finds viruses--it does not repair them. When it finds one, it will notify you and then will put it in quarrantine if you have configured ClamWin for that option.

The ability to repair a virus requires a lot of additional complicated code, and makes an antivirus program much larger. Some expensive commercial antivirus software also doesn't repair viruses, such as AVG from Grisoft, which has additional repair software for you to download, and you don't need to have the AVG software to use it. McAfee has Stinger software, which repairs many of the really bad viruses, and it is available even if you don't use McAfee. Most of the commercial antivirus sites on the Web have free repair software.

ClamWin does its job when it identifies a virus for you. You, as the user, have the responsibility of using safe computing, which includes trying to avoid viruses and repairing any of them that you may get. You can pay $50 or more for antivirus software, but you would still have this responsibility.

Clamwin is an excellent scanner. If you have an infected file and need to cure it you could try one of the free online scanners.

Personally I find the quarantine option is sufficient for me.
