Update Confusion for New User

Just started trying ClamAV a few days ago and I think I like it <smile>.

Now I have it set to check for definition updates automatically and notify on new releases.

Then, I received a new release notification via the announce mail list so I popped over to the web site. It looked like it was the same version I already have so I poked around and found "check latest version" which reports I have the current version installed.

Now I'm a bit thick so pardon my confusion. Because the page that tells me I have the current version does not have a dot version as in 0.99.1 but only shows .99, does it mean I may not have .99.1 that was just announced?

Many thanks for your work and your time.

Folks sorry for the waste of time. I've realized my error. The announce mail list is for ClamAV while the software I'm using, your software, is ClamWin. So the .99.1 is not announcement for ClamWin.

Again, apologies for my confusion.

Thanks for using ClamWin, and welcome.

Please keep in mind that, like the developers say on the ClamWin web page, it is not a real-time scanner--it only scans on demand as you schedule a scan or as you do a manual scan. So... you should use ClamWin as a backup to a real-time scanner. There are many free ones, and there is always the Microsoft Windows Defender that now comes with Windows.

I almost always only browse the internet via a virtual machine so on-demand scanning meets my needs. I've been using wide area network computing since the days of Fidonet, i.e. before public use of the "web," and I have never had a real virus. I have had my share of real, or perceived-by-me as, malware events. Windows 10 is just one of them.

I do understand that ClamWin is not on-access so no worries. FYI I've been using ClamAV on my web servers for -- well for many years.

Sorry--I just wanted to make sure you knew about the lack of real time capability. I do recall Fidonet but never used it.
