Dont know where to post this, but i am using latest clam sentinel 1.22 with 0.98.6 clamwin. My problem is that i noticed that my pc is hardly ever idle in cpu usage meaning that a lot of times 20% +cpu usage is always like that. I looked in taskmanager and it seems that clamscan.exe sometimes runs every 7 seconds, goes away, and then comes up again. I stopped clamsentinel from the menu and it stopped the clamscan.exe from running. So how can i keep clamsentinel running without this extra process runnning which is taking up too much cpu and memory? Thanks for any good replies. Note i am running this on win 8.1 pro 32 bit atom 3735f and 2gb ram 32gb ssd.

I haven't heard anything from Andrea, led developer, since he posted 1.22, and that was 7 months ago. There is rumor that Clam Sentinel maybe abandon, but I am not sure. On the other hand, Sentinel is good and it will still be good for sometime, even if it has been abandon.

As for CPU issues, it really depends on what kind of CPU has and how much Sentinel maybe using at the time. On mine, Sentinel only uses around 10% and I have a 3.9GHZ 6 core.

I suggest that you let Clam Sentinel do its "bad" scanning and then check the message log and the real-time log. See what it is scanning, and then see if the files involved can be excluded from scanning. Sentinel only scans when a file is dropped on your computer, copied somewhere, or modified. You might also want to "get" one of the files and upload it to Virus Total--just in case.

Thanks for using ClamWin and Clam Sentinel.

No need to post/send. If the log is from a time when Clam Sentinel was scanning unnecessarily, just look at the real-time log and see if there is one or more files that are listed often or that took up a lot of time/lines. Write those filenames down--filename dot extenlsion. Do the same thing with the message log--which kicks in when a new file is placed on the computer. Is there a pattern there? Is there one or more files that is mentioned most often? If there is, what are they doing? Are they from a program that you are using? Are they from a program that you do not know anything about? Are they Windows operating system files?

Let us know about it.

I think i've accomplished what i wanted to do here. Here are the paths i've added to the "paths or files not scanned" At first i the clamscan.exe was scanning almost all the time but it happens very rarely now. Maybe once in awhile but goes away and doesn't come unless it's supposed to system changes or so. By adding these paths i think i have 98% cut down the resources it was using.

C:\Users\Usulyre\AppData\

C:\Users\Usulyre\Desktop\

C:\Windows\Tasks\

C:\$Recycle.Bin

Thanks all for helping. Let you know if any additional problems arise.

Well, I'm glad we could help. Please verify any file that you whitelist by uploading it to the Virus Total free online scanner. If several other antiviruses say it is infected, it may very well be. I like to see at least 2 of these AVs detect a file to verify an infection: Avira AntiVir, Bitdefender, Eset Nod 32, Kaspersky, and Sophos. Each one uses its own scan engine (not licensed from someone else), has a large number of employees, and they are used around the world.

What is going on in your recycle bin? That dollar sign preceding the name looks a bit funny to me! Clam Sentinel ordinarily does not have much of a problem with the recycle bin. Some viruses can hide there, and some recycle bins are created by viruses to hide.

Like I said, please verify these files (or a good enough sample of them) with Virus Total.

If you can use Malwarebytes free antimalware, do so. It is a good malware cleaner that provides some extra protection--scan al least once a day with it in addition to ClamWin.

Thanks for using ClamWin/Clam Sentinel.

I don't have any files added to whitelist actually. The files scanned were in the tmp or temp directories which get created when installing programs or being used by programs. I am almost 100% sure that my computer has no malware or viruses and the programs i use are fine i am using them on other computers that used norton internet security and all is well.

The recycle bin cannot be found i've looked it up-you have to enable show hidden system files and folders in folder options and that will show where the path of the recycle bin is.

Okay. I suggest you get/keep a copy of Malwarebytes around though. The free version scans on-demand just like ClamWin and doesn't use any resources until it scans. Just update it before scanning, and it will spot the bad stuff.

Malware often goes to %AppData% until it's installed.
