ClamWin can only detect infected files for which it has a signature. The scanning engine and signature database is furnished to ClamWin by the Clam AV project. Clam AV was originally written for Linux emails servers, and it has not changed its orientation. There is no need to disinfect email attachments on those email servers, and email servers also do not have to worry much about false positive detections either.

ClamWin really needs to change its orientation toward Windows users in a real-time setting, but it does not have the budget/personnel for that. It is still reliant upon Clam AV, and we can only hope that Clam AV will develop these improvements.

Okay: ClamWin can only detect an infected file and put it in quarantine. It does not repair anything.

ClamWin will scan a file. If it detects a virus in the file, it will quarantine the file--if you have selected the Infected File preference option to quarantine. It is not a real-time scanner. A real-time scanner will scan your files automatically. ClamWin will only scan when you tell it to do a manual scan or when you have scheduled a scan. For the best protection, we recommend that you use a real-time scanner with ClamWin and keep ClamWin as a backup scanner. For Windows XP and newer computers, Microsoft Security Essentials is a good, free scanner that works well with ClamWin, and it will repair damage from infections. There are some other free scanners, but many of them come with adware/toolbars or do not offer full protection.

You can use ClamWin in real-time if you get the free, open source Clam Sentinel scanner at https://sourceforge.net/projects/clamsentinel/ on the web. Clam Sentinel scans files with ClamWin when they are created, modified, or copied on your computer, but it does not repair damage from infections--it tries to scan/quarantine before any damage is done. Clam Sentinel also has its own heuristic system monitor that can detect viruses in files that do not have a ClamWin signature. You must have ClamWin installed on your computer before you install Clam Sentinel. Clam Sentinel can be used on Windows 98 and newer computers. If you decide to use Clam Sentinel, please read the Clam Sentinel Simple Guide before using Clam Sentinel.

I use Security Essentials and Clam Sentinel with ClamWin, and they provide very good security. To prevent any conflicts, exclude the ClamWin data folder from Security Essentials scans so it will not trigger on any ClamWin virus signatures or quarantined files--also exclude .clamtmp files as an excluded file type from Security Essentials so it will not trigger on any ClamWin temporary scanning files. Use the Clam Sentinel defaults, and make sure Security Essentials is set to scan in real-time.

Security Essentials has very low false positive detections, and it does very well at cleaning infections. Like ClamWin and Clam Sentinel, it is free and does not install any adware.
