I think clamwin just adds a windows frontend to clamAV....ClamAV is the source...the engine that power clamwin....ClamWin is windows version of clamAV antivirus...nothing else..

That's right about the Windows front end to Clam AV. ClamWin also does not scan in real-time as files are put on your computer, while Clam AV can do this, with some additional software.

However, ClamWin can be used as a basic real-time scanner for Windows with the free Clam Sentinel add-on available at https://sourceforge.net/projects/clamsentinel/ on the web. Sentinel uses ClamWin to scan files that are added, modified or copied on your computer, and it also includes USB protection. You must have ClamWin installed/configured first in order to use Sentinel. Clam Sentinel was introduced in October 2009, and it has come a long way since then. Additional capabilities are under development.

I'd like to discuss in more detail Clamwin vs ClamAV for Windows. I am doing it here since the ClamAV for Windows forum
doesn't exist and the mailing list to discuss such things is kind of quiet:
https://lists.clamav.net/pipermail/clamav-win32/
[nothing posted in June and August and only 1 posting in July]

1. Why has ClamAV created a competing package? What was missing from Clamwin? Why didn't
ClamAV contribute to the Clamwin package and make it better rather than create a competing package?

2. Suppose I want to install ClamAV for Windows offline. I see that they have an install file at:
https://www.clamav.net/win32/ClamAVWindowsSetup.exe
but that is an Installer that requires Internet access to install ClamAV for Windows. Does anyone know
where one can find a complete binary to install offline?

3. CLI: With Clamwin I used clamscan to scan via CLI. How is one supposed to scan with ClamAV for
Windows via a CLI? Syntax?

Thanks!

I think ClamAV for Windows will hardly be used for the following 2 reasons:
https://www.clamav.net/lang/en/support/faq/faq-win32/

Q1. Hey I went searching though the installed files from this application and didn’t find LibClamAV.dll. Where is it?

A1. Currently ClamAV and its components are running in the Cloud, off your system. ClamAV for Windows 3.0 scheduled for release in November 2010 will contain a full LibClamAV detection engine. This will be our first fully integrated product release.

[so not only can one not install it offline, one can't scan offline!]

Q7. Will ClamAV for Windows send any sensitive data from my computer to the cloud?

A7. ClamAV for Windows sends information about the files its scanning back to the cloud. This information is in the form of SHA hashes and file heuristics. Currently, this information is only collected for Windows PE files, or in other terms what most people refer to as executable files. No information is collected for other types of files, like Word, Excel, or PDF. Additionally, in some situations the entire PE file will be uploaded to the Cloud to determine if it is malicious.

These guys Immunet and Sourcefire are obviously not in touch as to what users want. I'll stick with ClamWin!

The Clam AV version for Windows supplied by Clam AV is very hard to work with. You almost have to build it yourself. Evidently they do not realize that one of the reasons why Windows/Windows products are used versus other OS stuff is because of ease of use.

I think that the partnership with Immunet is so that Clam will not have to do any more work on a Windows prouduct, and perhaps to get a bit of revenue, plus Imunet offers Clam an easy entrance into the "cloud."

I think ClamWin with the Clam Sentinel front-end is a good competitor and should be very competitive by year-end.
