ClamWin refuses to start on Windows 98SE

Hi,

I just installed ClamWin version 0.96 on my new Windows 98SE installation (it worked fine on my Windows 98FE (95 upgrade) installation) and clamwin crashes on run with absolutely no console output.

It creates the file clamwin.conf in its binary directory, but does not touch the proper settings directory (C:\Windows\All Users\.clamwin, which is where it has installed the database files etc).

In order to get clamscan and freshclam to work on their own without passing the database location every time, I had to copy all of the files from C:\Windows\All Users\.clamwin to C:\Program Files\ClamWin\bin. Therefore, I can use the command line programs, but ClamWin still refuses to run.

Upgrading to XP is not an option, especially since I'm deliberately leaving the computer on 98 for better compatibility for old games (the entire computer is pretty much a museum in itself, and I use this computer (with Linux) for everything else). I'm using ClamWin because it is one of the few virus scanners out there that still support 98 - and AVG was annoying the hell out of me with its attempts to upgrade to a version that wouldn't run on 98 anyway.

I have 98lite and the Windows 95 explorer installed - could this have anything to do with it?

Thanks,

Matt.

Quite possible, it works on a stock Win 98.

Oh, happy days are here to stay!

Nothing says "ClamWin won't work with the Windows 95 version of shell32.dll and/or comdlg32.dll" quite like

Code:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "ClamWin.py", line 30, in ?
  File "wxFrameMain.pyo", line 29, in ?
  File "Utils.pyo", line 31, in ?
  File "win32com\shell\shell.pyo", line 9, in ?
File "win32com\shell\shell.pyo", line 7, in __load
ImportError: DLL load failed: A device attached to the system is not functioning.
.

I don't suppose there is any easy way for me to hack the Python source in order to get the program to load shell32.w98 (98lite's copy of the Windows 98 shell32.dll) instead of shell32.dll, is there? I'm loath to part with the brute efficiency that is the windows 95 shell =P

Thanks,

Matt.
