Is there any way to stop the mini-icon for Clamwin that shows up when one starts up one's computer from appearing?

A"silent install" might leave the icon out of your system tray. Why do you want to get rid of it, however? Clicking on the icon enables you to use/configure ClamWin and get some messages about it. Without it, the only way to access the program is via the desktop icon. ClamWin is not a real-time/on-access scanner, so you need to be able to run/configure it.

Yes, well, it slows down my computer when it is always on. What is a silent install?

Here is some info on a silent install--never done it, but it may help you: https://www.clamwin.com/content/view/100/27/ on the ClamWin FAQ menu.
You might minimize resource use by liming what ClamWin does for you. Just take a look the the configuration options and select to do all you can manually-- no scheduled scans, no popups, no internet automatic updates, no out of date warnings, no notification of new version.
