Hello, I'm new at this forum & glad that it exists! It gives me the opportunity to post/ask the following...
I've used this program before & new it lacks some features (i. e., it isn't vigilant in the background for treats) & also that it's not famous for its speed. But it took from very early this morning to the afternoon (almost 12 hrs) to complete my HD scan even though it jumped over certain folders due to a denial of access issue emitted by, probably Windows XP. Under these lines I'm fixing my report for you to check out.

* The characters on these lines starting with ---> were added by me & not by the scanner program. If one add up those figures they get close to 640 MB, almost the size of a full data-cd. If the HD is 18.6 GB, the free space is 3.79 GB as reported by WE & from the occupied space one need to subtract those 640 MB the bottom line should give something close to 14.2 GB that were effectively scanned. I seriously doubt that, as you can see from the report itself, 12 hrs for scanning such a space is way too much.
What might have happenned for this to occur &, more important still, what can be done to evade such an occurrence again?

Twelve hours is certainly too long for a scan of the size of your hard drive--which is about 140GB, right? In my opinion, any scan that takes longer than 45 minutes is too long! My hard drive on my XP machine is about 160GB, and it takes about 39 minutes for ClamWin to scan it. The data actually scanned is about 11GB because I do not scan every file on my hard drive. I configure ClamWin to scan only the following extensions: bat, cmd, com, cpl, crt, dll, doc, exe, flv, hlp, htm, html, inf, js, jse, lnk, mdb, msi, ocx, pdf, php, pif, png, ppt, reg, rtf, scr, shs, swf, sys, tmp, url, vb, vbe, vbs, wsf, wsh, xlm, xls, zip, rar, avi, drv, hta, dot, pot, ppp, wsc, jar. Here is an example of how I configure the bat extension to be scanned in ClamWin: *.bat. (no period in ClamWin). This list of extensions could probably be reduced even more with little added virus exposure.

Some people might argue that I may miss something or that I should include this extension or exclude that one, but I think these are the most likely files to be infected, and I can live the tradeoff in time saved. Try this and see if it helps. I also exclude the C:\Windows\winsxs\* directory from my ClamWin scans. Again, some might argue against this, but I have yet to see a virus there in about 2 years of working malware, and it speeds my scans up quite a bit.

Until ClamWin gets a real-time/on-access scanner, I am using the free ClamSentinel front-end which enables ClamWin to scan files as they are put on your computer or modified. The defaults it comes with are okay for most users. It is available at https://sourceforge.net/projects/clamsentinel/ on the web and is a separate Open Source project from ClamWin. I also recommend you use an antispyware program with ClamWin/Sentinel for extra protection. Try Microsoft Windows Defender--again, some might argue, but it's free and it's pretty good.

If you don't want to mess with any of this, get Microsoft's feee Security Essentials.

As you may've not noticed, my HD is just 18.6GB in total. That's precisely the reason for me to have posted this. In the case my HD would've been 160GB, for ex., it would've tired me out but that alone would not disturb my ulcer.
I'll take a detailed view of your recomendations with respect to both, the .ext's & the other application you mentioned.

Has anyone experiences with ClamWin/Sentinel on a W2K3? I run a WHS with ClamWin.

thanks for the extension list. My last Scan runs over 18 ours on my WHS. I hope the list reduces the runtime.
