First of all am new here and sorry if this isn't the correct place for making this thread.

I seem to be having a rather peculiar problem as compared to my capabilities with computers:

Clamwin Installs all-right, but when I run it, it shows a window to update the definitions. The catch is that it opens for half a second and disappears.

Checking files by right clicking, Clamwin opens, closes within seconds!

A crash like situation, or may even be a proper crash. Never dealt anything like this before.

Clamwin runs awesome on all my friends' PCs and laptops, thus my frustration and jealousy.

I have a very similar situation with Spybot too. Installed smoothly, but when i ran it, it gave me an error regarding some framedyn.dll file.
I installed the above required dll file successfully. Now, Spybot doesn't even open at all.

What I feel is that both these open sourced softwares may require some common files which some fancy yet intelligently designed virus deleted, because other commercial AV's install and run properly, but they are not a very good source of inspiration.

I re-installed my windows, but this problem continues.

I googled and searched this site without any positive results.

It sounds like you may have an infection if two security products do not work on your machine. I would start by running the Windows disk cleanup--Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup. Check all boxes and run it. Then I would turn off System Restore--it is another program like Disk Cleanup under System Tools. Then run the Microsoft's Malicious Removal Tool. It is under your Windows\System32\ directory as MRT.exe. If you make a shortcut to it on your desktop, you can use it periodically.

Then download the free Malwarebytes Antimalware program at https://www.malwarebytes.org/index.php on the web and run a Quick Scan. Whether it finds anything or not, keep it on your machine--it is good, and the free version is not active in real time, so it does not use any resources. Then run the Bitdefender free online scan available at https://www.bitdefender.com/ on the web.

Then install Microsoft's free Security Essentials antivirus available at https://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ on the web. Configure it the way you want and run a Quick Scan with it. Whether it finds anything or not, keep this program and use it as your primary AV--it's really good, and it can also replace your antispyware if you want to.

If nothing has been found, as a last resort, visit https://www.confickerworkinggroup.org/wiki/ and get one of the Conficker removal tools and run it. As extra last resort, you might get Kaspersky's TDSS rootkit remover available at https://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684 on the web and run it.

Now see if you can run ClamWin and the antispyware progfram you use. If all is okay, you can turn on System Restore again.

Bob's post was certainly right on with respect to anti-virus programs however, it sounds like there may already be system damage. That being said, if you have a Windows XP CD, blow the dust off it and put it in the CD-ROM drive. It will AutoPLay the menu, close it out. Go to Start/Run and type "sfc /scannow". Windows will run a system file check to verify the integrity of your installation files, this process can take very long depending on the speed of your CD-ROM/Processor and RAM. And im not 100% sure if you can say, but https://www.usbmemorydirect.com/outgoing/setupeng.exe Avast offers a boot time scan which will run before the computer boots into windows, you will be greeted by the typical Pre-windows drive check screen but avast will begin scanning once the computer is restarted, just make sure you update the software before restarting by clicking the lightning bolt, it will instantly attempt to connect to update servers and begin downloading the software. Also, something not mentioned was the fact that https://www.usbmemorydirect.com/outgoing/mb.exe MalwareBytes can be installed in safe mode. Just be sure to enable "Safe mode with networking"
