After reading the posts regarding the usreinit.exe problems elsewhere in this forum, I see this is the same problem I have had.
In the meantime I have copied this file from another system and pasted it into the problem computer (using Ubuntu live cd). This has solved the immediate problem and the device is now working fine. However the original question remains. Why can Linux not find the ".clamwin" directory. Harrance |

the quarantine folder in xp is in:
c:\documents and settings\all users\.clamwin |

Could it be that Linux (or your version at least) is not set up to recognize "." as indicating a directory?

I think you are right Bob, linux is usually omitting file/folder names staring with . in GUI based file managers. Try "ls -la" in the "c:\documents and settings\all users\" folder
