Is there an updated version of Portable ClamWin? Currently, I am using version .88.2.3. I see where 88.3 and now 88.4 have been released, but those seem to be for use on computers, not portable products like USB flash drives.

Expect it this week. It's being renamed to ClamWin Portable along with all the other apps at PortableApps.com and I'm adding in CD support out of the box. |

That's cool. I only started using ClamWin Portable a few weeks ago. It was one of the programs I added to my USB flash, since I'm spending more time than normal fixing problems on the computers of family and friends. Looking forward to the new update.

If you'd like to test it, the pre-release is here:
https://portableapps.com/node/2567 It now supports running from CD. |

Hello John,
The PC on which i tried to run PortableClamWin didn't have the COMSPEC environment variable defined, so ClamWin wouldn't run. It's in our FAQ, but you may want to put it into the known issues on your web page too, for people that don't go through the effort of reading clamwin faqs. It's a great tool, thanks for that! |

Actually, I could check for this in the launcher and then construct one if it doesn't yet exist. In Windows 95/98/me it's %SYSTEMROOT%\command.com and in Windows 2000/XP it would be %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\cmd.exe. We can use SYSTEMROOT since that is defined by Windows itself and doesn't need to be set in configuration. Perhaps this check should be built into ClamWin as well. It would eliminate this issue. |

It works. I've tested it on systems without COMPSEC set and it works like a charm. I'm including it in today's release of ClamWin Portable 0.88.4. I think it'll be handy as people often use the portable version to clean random systems... some of which may not have COMSPEC set. This way, they don't need to worry about it. As for how it works, it basically pulls the COMSPEC path from the environment variable. If it's 1 character or less, it constructs its own. First, it checks to see if %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\cmd.exe exists... if so, it sets the variable as that. If not, it checks if %SYSTEMROOT%\command.com exists. If it does, it sets that. If not, it display an error and ends. That should cover all the bases... and ClamWin could add that internally for the next release. |

Recently downloaded 88.4. I've been using 88.2.3. Since logs and quarantined files can be copied separately, from a program operational standpoint, is it better to "uninstall" the prior version before installing the newer one?

With the new portable version, you have to, since all the directory layouts have changed. Of course, you can keep em installed side by side with no issue if you were so inclined. |
