Hoping someone knows what might be happening here,
Yesterday i had a call from a family member saying the pc (Running XP Pro) wont go past the user log in screen. It shows the desktop but with no icons, then goes to "Welcome" screen and then shows the user accounts. (Which is unusual as the pc does not usually require login).
Once you click on the user account it quickly shows "loggin on" and the immediately switches to "logging off".
I have tried a repair install of XP but it did not fix the problem.
This morning my own pc has done exactly the same thing, and i then received calls from 2 other family members reporting the same fault on their pc's.
Thats 4 pc's with the same fault within 24 hours!
All are running XP Pro and have Clamwin running.
Sounds all to co-incidental to be a windows fault which makes me suspect a virus.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Gareth

It may be a false positive detection from ClamWin on one or more Windows system files. We are getting reports of this, and if a user has ClamWin set to remove or quarantine (instead of report only), they will lose access to their Windows system.
See the posts under the Virus Scanner forum regarding "Another False Positive" for help/advice.

All are set to either Quarrantine or remove virus on detection so you may be onto something.
If only i could get into windows at all i could run some checks ...

Check those posts I referred to in the Scanning Forum. They may be of help. Also do some searching in all forums for false positives, quarantine restore, recovery console, etc.

Look at this thread. It sounds like the file c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe has been deleted/quarantined. You'll need a windows Cd rom to rectify this. Boot off your windows XP disk and then in recovery mode type EXPAND E:\i386\userinit.ex_ c:\windows\system32
