Clamwin & Windows Vista incompatible?

When I run the virus scanner to scan the entire C:, it stops suddenly when it gets to the Windows folder and then says it has an error. The results are empty and the screen just says "completed." I have tried the suggestion from the FAQ regarding this issue and it has not fixed the issue.

I am running on Windows Vista Home Edition. I have uninstalled and reinstalled clamwin hoping that would remedy the problem but no such luck. Please help!

Hello,
seems I am having the same results on my laptop running Vista SP3 and ClamWin updated to 0.93.1 . I made a complete scan of C: buth the scan summary does not appear and only a 'Completed' notification is shown. Checked on the logfile and all I could find was:

Scan Started Sun Jun 29 21:50:32 2008
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I tried to scan only C:\windows\system32 directory but result was just as the same. ClaWin crashed during scan and reported as above. Guess this is a bug of 0.93.1 since till 0.93 everything worked just fine (see below)

Scan Started Sun Jun 08 12:44:38 2008
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

----------- SCAN SUMMARY -----------
Known viruses: 306891
Engine version: 0.93
Scanned directories: 12511
Scanned files: 91924
Infected files: 0
Data scanned: 13629.36 MB
Time: 5805.852 sec (96 m 45 s)

Hopefully ClamWin developers will fix that asap.

Is there anyway to downgrade back to version .92 or .93? I don't see any links for it on the website...

Hello,
Personally I would not try to roll back to 0.93 since you will always get notifications that the ClamAV engine version installed is outdated. Better wait till the matter with 0.93.1 on Vista is fixed. Anyway if you wish to recover the older version you can download it at
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=105508

In the meantime, to prevent infections make sure you have installed a resident AV scanner on yr. machine (Clamwin has not real time function enabled by now). There are several AV tools with can be downloaded for personal and non-commercial use (amongst others, Avira Antivir, AVG Free and Avast) and have strong efficiency.

Hope this helps,
Antonio

Alch/Sherpya: any news about this issue? I just tried to scan System32 folder but Clamwin crashed during the operation... Will this be fixed when implementing version 0.93.3?
Thanks a lot in advance for yr. help and keep the good work going.

vista sp3 ? Very Happy

the codebase for clamwin gui is almost the same across versions is almost the same
so crashes between these versions is some sort of randomness

it's clamwin or clamscan that crashes?

unfortunately I don't have a vista install to try it so it's not easy for me to debug the problem

Hello,
Sorry, my mistake. I am running Vista Home with SP1. Seems that Clamscan is the program which is crashing when trying to scan System32 directory (on tray icon a pop up message appears notifying that 'an error occurrred during Virus scan.'
I have tried to scan also the Documents and Settings folder. Below is the report.

Scan Started Wed Jul 09 12:26:07 2008
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WARNING: Can't access file \\?\C:\Documents and Settings

----------- SCAN SUMMARY -----------
Known viruses: 344253
Engine version: 0.93.1
Scanned directories: 0
Scanned files: 0
Infected files: 0

Data scanned: 0.00 MB
Time: 14.623 sec (0 m 14 s)
--------------------------------------
Completed
--------------------------------------

Yesterday I tried also to scan running processes. Below is the report:

Scan Started Tue Jul 08 11:52:23 2008
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*** Scanning Programs in Computer Memory ***
---Please login as an Administrator to scan System processes loaded in computer memory---
*** Memory Scan: using ToolHelp ***

*** Scanned 29 processes - 377 modules ***
*** Computer Memory Scan Completed ***

----------- SCAN SUMMARY -----------
Known viruses: 344253
Engine version: 0.93.1
Scanned directories: 0
Scanned files: 406
Infected files: 0
Data scanned: 224.03 MB
Time: 125.794 sec (2 m 5 s)

Could this be a problem related to access to system as administrator or single user? Anyway such problems did not appear till I was running version 0.93 and I have not changed settings on my machine since then. Maybe these problems are related to security updates of Vista and not to ClamWin itself...

I'll make another try; will uninstall and reinstall the software once again and make further checks. I'll keep you posted of results.
Regards,
Antonio

Hello,
uninstalled and reinstalled Clamwin but this led to no solution. Clamscan aborted during a full C: scan while analysing Windows folder. I cannot scan any of the single folders (see below a couple of examples), perhaps there are some Vista security settings active which do not allow Clamscan to operate:

Scan Started Wed Jul 09 14:45:48 2008
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WARNING: Can't access file \\?\C:\Documents and Settings

----------- SCAN SUMMARY -----------
Known viruses: 344928
Engine version: 0.93.1
Scanned directories: 0
Scanned files: 0
Infected files: 0
Data scanned: 0.00 MB
Time: 8.814 sec (0 m 8 s)

Scan Started Wed Jul 09 14:46:12 2008
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WARNING: Can't access file \\?\C:\Programmi

----------- SCAN SUMMARY -----------
Known viruses: 344928
Engine version: 0.93.1
Scanned directories: 0
Scanned files: 0
Infected files: 0
Data scanned: 0.00 MB
Time: 8.861 sec (0 m 8 s)

I am available to make further tests if required. If this is the case pls let me know.

Antonio

Antonio, you can contact Alch/Sherpya if you are not already a beta tester and would like to be one. I think more Vista users are needed for beta testing.

Could you tell us how are you starting the scan? Right-click in Explorer or from within Clamwin GUI?

Thanks for reply Alch.
Well I made a test trying to scan the same folder firstly through GUI, on second try via Windows explorer. Results listed below:

1-Scan via GUI (selected folder from root, then hit the button 'Scan')
Scan Started Thu Jul 10 13:37:41 2008
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WARNING: Can't access file \\?\C:\Programmi

----------- SCAN SUMMARY -----------
Known viruses: 345515
Engine version: 0.93.1
Scanned directories: 0
Scanned files: 0
Infected files: 0
Data scanned: 0.00 MB
Time: 9.173 sec (0 m 9 s)

2-Scan via Explorer (located the folder; right clicked and chose 'Scan with Clamwin free Antivirus' option)

Scan Started Thu Jul 10 13:38:14 2008
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

----------- SCAN SUMMARY -----------
Known viruses: 345515
Engine version: 0.93.1
Scanned directories: 3068
Scanned files: 39748
Infected files: 0
Data scanned: 2019.65 MB
Time: 1451.456 sec (24 m 11 s)

I'll do later a full scan of C: using these two options. I will keep you posted about the results.

Regards
Antonio

P.S.: If beta testers for Vista are needed I will be glad to apply (currently using Vista Home basic SP1).

Can you try please a debug build?

download this file
http://oss.netfarm.it/clamav/files/clamav-0.93.3-debug-win32.7z http://oss.netfarm.it/clamav/files/clamav-0.93.3-debug-win32.7z

unpack and copy the content in clamwin/bin directory
overwrite files but do not remove libclamav.dll libclamamunrar.dll and libclamunrar_iface.dll
they are needed by pyc.pyd that is needed by clamwin gui

debug versions of dll have "d" suffix so you will only overwrite executables

Hello Sherpya,
Downloaded the archive, unpacked and overwrote files in clamwin/bin. I made 3 different tests as per list below:

1-Scan of computer memory

Restart of PC

2-Complete scan of C: via GUI
3-Complete scan of C: via windows explorer +right clicking on 'scan with Clamwin Free antivirus' option

In all the three cases scans were carried out completely and successfully. Very Happy

Thank you for all the support.
BTW, before installing the debug version I noticed that Clamscan crashes occurred during c:\windows\system32 scan. I was able to capture a screenshot the moment the software crashed. It reported some messages so if it can be of any help let me know so I can send it via mail.

Thanks again and regards,
Antonio

yes it would be very helpfull,
I've also recevied some feedbacks from the 64bit version and it worked fine, but I don't known if your crashes were related to 0.93.1, these binaries are 0.93.3
anyway my email is sherpya@netfarm.it

I can confirm the same problem with ClamWin 0.93.1. I tried running the scan elevated and non-elevated with user account control and the same error occurred. However, after I copied the debug files to my bin directory the scan now completes successfully without being elevated. Thank you for the support.
