Hi, folks!
I'm new at this forum. I've tried to update my Clamwin, but I've received this result:

Then I've been having a look at the forums, and as indicated at http://forums.clamwin.com/viewtopic.php?t=403, I've changed the update server, but anyway I've this error:

seems if the DNS round robin (or some servers specifically transip.nl which is the host/ISP for db.local.clamav.net ) isnt working properly but you can update manually
find a mirror close to you

http://www.clamav.net/mirrors.html
then download in your browser by appending daily.cvd to the end of the mirror

eg:

h*ttp://clamav.mirror.racksense.com/daily.cvd

or preferrably

h*ttp://db.[insert your country code here eg DE or US].clamav.net/daily.cvd

US users
http://db.us.clamav.net/daily.cvd

UK
http://db.uk.clamav.net/daily.cvd

FR
http://db.fr.clamav.net/daily.cvd

NL
http://db.nl.clamav.net/daily.cvd

DE
http://db.de.clamav.net/daily.cvd

AU
http://db.au.clamav.net/daily.cvd

JP
http://db.jp.clamav.net/daily.cvd

you get the idea
and then place the file in your clamwin database (db) folder overwriting the old one (should be 850k +)

Thanks, Bugme.
Now the problem is solved. Probably the server was down.

Hi

I am not very computer literate.
I have been getting the same problem as eladio was having.

I clicked on the link for Australia, but it didn't work. (usining IE got page can't be displayed and in firefox i get a lot of jibberish.

The problem why i can't get it to work is most likely me as other people seem to. Like i said i am not very comp literate.

...but the fix suggested, that worked for him, didn't work for me.

I did download the daily.cvd file using the browser (1,107 kb) & placed it in the folder named in the configuration settings, but the program still tells me it has no up-to-date virus database, and always fails when it tries to download it.

can this product be used from behind a corporate firewall? if so, how?

I too had the same problem as eladio, where DNS lookups for any name in the clamav.net domain always resulted in the IP address 80.69.67.32, which didn't work. I suspected it might have been DNS cache poisoning on some upstream DNS server, so I tried clearing the DNS cache on my Linux system ("rndc flush") and the next freshclam run worked fine. I'll keep this in mind if it happens again, but I'm puzzled as to why it happens in the first place. Is it DNS configuration problems somewhere along the line, or is someone really doing DNS cache poisoning attacks to prevent clamav updates? Either way, it would be good to know where the problem is occurring so that it could be fixed.

Hi, I'm new here. I do not have any knowledge about computer.

I've tried to update virus database since I got this message:
"Virus database update is older than 3days and may not offer the latest prtection. Would you like to update it now?"

Then I click "YES". However next I always get following result:
ClamAV update process started at Sat Mar 17 04:28:03 2007
WARNING: Invalid DNS reply. Falling back to HTTP mode.
Reading CVD header (main.cvd): ERROR: Can't get information about database.clamav.net: No IP address

Reading CVD header (daily.cvd): ERROR: Can't get information about database.clamav.net: No IP address

How should i do? I need help!! Please!!

freshclam cannot resolve ip address of clamav db update site, you may have a firewall that blocks it or a misconfigured dns

I suggest that you wait for 30 minutes or so and try to update again. Try this a couple of times, and the situation will probably correct on its own. I occasionally get errors like this, and they eventually resolve. If it doesn't, as Sherpya said, you may have a problem with your firewall. In this case, makse sure you configure your firewall to allow the freshclam.exe update application to access the Web. This isn't a problem with Microsoft's XP firewall, but it could be with other firewalls that also control outgoing programs.

Hello! Please, please advise. I get the following reports. Clamscan, clam tray, freshclam, and virus scanner are all exceptions in my firewall. I have been getting these reports since I installed--at least a month ago.

Virus Update Report

freshclam 0.90.1 (OS: win32, ARCH: x86, CPU: i686)
ClamAV update process started at Mon Mar 26 16:09:37 2007
WARNING: Invalid DNS reply. Falling back to HTTP mode.
Reading CVD header (main.cvd): ERROR: Can't get information about database.clamav.net: No IP address
main.cvd is up to date (version: 42, sigs: 83951, f-level: 10, builder: tkojm)
Reading CVD header (daily.cvd): ERROR: Can't get information about database.clamav.net: No IP address
daily.inc is up to date (version: 2850, sigs: 15490, f-level: 14, builder: ccordes)

If I update manually, I get this report:

daily.inc updated (version: 2943, sigs: 18984, f-level: 14, builder: ccordes)
Database updated (102935 signatures) from database.clamav.net (IP: 67.18.105.98)

Do I need to add your site to my trusted sites list? If so, which address do I use? If I am supposed to follow the following instructions (from the faq page), I don't know how or where, so I can't.

"There is a problem with your DNS server. Please check the entries in /etc/resolv.conf and verify that you can resolve the TXT record manually: $ host -t txt current.cvd.clamav.net If you can’t, it means your network is broken. You’ll be still able to download the updates, but you’ll waste a lot of bandwidth checking for updates."

I also tried to update the mirror as per bugme, but I use Firefox and get a lot of jibberish. So I guess that I can't update my mirror either. How frustrating to be so incapable. :(

you only need to unlock freshclam.exe in your firewall, you may want also to unlock clamwin.exe/clamtray.exe for "check for updates" feature, but it's not needed
watching the log it seams that freshclam is not able to resolve the ip, this means that freshclam.exe somehow cannot make an udp request to the dns.
That you can update manually and not from clamwin is very strange, maybe the firewall get fooled by the fact that freshclam is a child of clamwin or clamtray
another problem may be that you dns settings have a strange configuration,

manually remove all files in db directory (you should not have clamwin scanning) then reupdate,
You are a bit unlucky since clamav has geo-localized mirrors via dns, so your local mirror is not synchronized
you may report this to main clamav team
